Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday touted securing the support of half of the Senate Democrats for his amendment to defund the Pentagon by 10 percent and invest in distressed communities instead.
Sanders amendment gained support from 23 members of the Senate Democrat Caucus half of the 45 Democrats in the Senate.
The support was not enough to get the amendment passed and part of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, but was a show of support from Democrats for defunding the military.
Sanders said in a statement after the vote:
"Today, almost half of the members of the Senate Democratic Caucus 23 Senators voted to cut Pentagon spending by 10% and invest in human needs. This is far and away the most significant step forward in recent years in addressing our bloated $740 billion military budget and changing our national priorities.
"We are going to continue building a political movement which understands that it is far more important to invest in working people, the children, the elderly, and the poor than in spending more on defense than the next 11 nations combined."
Sanders amendment was co-sponsored by progressive Sens. Ed Markey (MA), Elizabeth Warren (MA), Jeff Merkley (OR), Ron Wyden (OR), and was endorsed by Senate Democratic Leader Schumer (D-NY).
Sanders also pointed out that a companion bill in the House received 40 percent support from Democrats.
The amendments to defund the Pentagon come on the heels of progressive activists calls to defund the police.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called Sanders proposal unhinged.
Today, the Senate will vote on a Democrat amendment to slash defense spending that was advertised in an op-ed titled Defund the Pentagon. From defunding the police to defunding the U.S. Armed Forces. he tweeted.

Hey Pubbies..PSST....you BETTER START FIGHTING THIS CRAP!
Bernie Sanders is CHINA'S B!TCH!
Yep!
These people are nuts and “the people” elected them. Therein lies the problem.....Basic stupidity.
Soviets’ bitch.
I think half the Dem caucus that voted for this insanity is from the biggest nutjob left states and would be rewarded for their vote. The others in the purplish or slightly red states were not about to jeopardize their paycheck and fall on their sword.
How many RINOs are reaching across the aisle?
Good....the campaign issues just keep getting better for the gop-e IF they will act.
Defund the police and military, making the USA ripe for takeover by whoever wants it (all of whom are major contributors to democrat coffers.)
9-11 was such a long time ago, and heck those guys don’t hate us anymore. Might as well get rid of the military. Right Bern?
Interesting. Cutting the Pentagon by 10% would be doable. But first you have to get rid of the revolving door gravy train.
Every current officer above Lt. Col. should be defunded.
arrest the lot and deport them Back To hell
Bernie Sanders Secures Support from Half of Senate Democrats In Bid to Defund the Pentagon

No one needs to worry about this. You can’t have globalism without the Pentagon. Seriously...when has the Democrat Party not been unified on virtually every kooky idea known to man? Half of their rank say “no” outright. This allows some of their pols to say “Yes” to defunding in order to appease the mentally ill within the party. There’s no way that the party of exporting Leftism around the globe will undercut the tool for doing so.
How about we cut the funding of the military by removing all the pendajos Obama installed to radicalize the military? That should be a fairly hefty savings.
How many citizens have taken an oath to defend this country from both foreign AND DOMESTIC enemies?
They are declaring themselves domestic enemies for goodness sake! They’re want to deconstruct the entire country.
Arrest them.
LOONS on parade. Putin and Biden cheer.
The Senate and House should lead by example and take a 10% pay cut!
