Chief Justice Roberts joined the the liberal bloc of the Supreme Court in deciding Governor Newsom has the right to deny churchgoers the right to assemble during this pandemic.
Once again, Roberts logic is muddled as he this time sided with the far left against the First Amendment of the United States.
The Hill reported:
"The Supreme Court issued a rare late-night ruling on Friday against a California church challenging their states stay-at-home order.
In a 5-4 vote, Chief Justice John Roberts broke from other conservative justices to rule in favor of the state. The case was brought by the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, Calif., which said Gov. Gavin Newsoms (D) stay-at-home order ignored religious freedoms.
Roberts noted in an opinion concurring in the unsigned ruling that the restrictions in place are applied to non-religious gatherings and therefore dont pose a threat to religious liberties.
Although Californias guidelines place restrictions on places of worship, those restrictions appear consistent with the free exercise clause of the First Amendment, Roberts wrote.
Similar or more severe restrictions apply to comparable secular gatherings, including lectures, concerts, movie showings, spectator sports, and theatrical performances, where large groups of people gather in close proximity for extended periods of time, he wrote."
And we are supposed to trust him with 2nd Amendment cases? Another legacy gift from GW.
Impeach Earl Warren!
The Devil is giddy...
F-ing loser! Nearly Bush’s biggest mistake. The Dems have something on him.
Why do they call Roberts “conservative”? He has proven several times he’s not. What a disappointment.
We need that 6th seat so Red Roberts is irrelevant forever.
Thanks W.
Despise you more every day.
There is a very large unresolved question - what constitutes the END of the pandemic, to the degree that prohibitions now in place may be fully lifted?
Or are we condemned to live in the “perpetual pandemic”?
Endless crises are not good for the human psyche. There has to be room for respite.
Get the impeachment started!!!
Theyve managed to keep Ginsberg alive so far. Think she will make it another 4 years?
But going to Safeway, CostCo, and pretty much any box store with hundreds of people milling about but going to a church??? I guess so much for separation of church and state.
congress (Pelosi and Turtle) have the power to impeach judges. Not gonna happen.
I never trusted Roberts after his Obamacare fiasco.
Use it to restrict peaceful proesters (rioters, looters) to no more than 100 at a time.
So, governors and the President can restrict peaceful demonstrators to no more than 100 per the 4 liberals and the flake
Time for church goers to riot?
What about ‘Samuel Anthony Alito’? Gee W appointed him too.
As much as I hated some of things he did, I thank God everyday that G.W. Bush was elected instead of Owl Gore or Jon Kerry.
So Roberts believes that because churches have been treated the same as other parties then the rights of the church haven’t been violated. Well, then why can’t he also answer why churches can’t be treated like grocery stores and others that were allowed to remain open. By the way, where in the Constitution does it mention Safeway and Home Depot? Roberts has been compromised by the same domestic spying apparatus that attempted to take down Carter Page and Gen. Flynn. Obama used these tools when Obamacare was before the court.
Roberts should resign and take his bitter dose of medicine provided those that are holding his past over him choose to reveal what they know.
Yep. Roberts is denying that the text of the 1A recognizes religious activities in a special way beyond what commercial and recreation activities are afforded.
This is studied ignorance, taught in every law school in the country.
No. God will fight our battles for us.
As much as I hated some of things he did, I thank God everyday that G.W. Bush was elected instead of Owl Gore or Jon Kerry.
And every do you do that G. W. Bush couldn’t care less about you and yours.
