A black man says he asked a white woman in Central Park to put her dog on a leash.
Then, video shows her calling police and telling emergency operators that the man was threatening her and her dog. The woman, who has been identified as Amy Cooper, has apologized. But by Tuesday afternoon she was fired from her job at an investment management firm.
"Following our internal review of the incident in Central Park yesterday, we have made the decision to terminate the employee involved, effective immediately. We do not tolerate racism of any kind at Franklin Templeton," the company said in a statement posted to Twitter.
WATCH the video for yourself. In fact watch it twice. One listening to the voices and inflection. Watch her reaction.

Maybe you should read the thread. The man admitted to threatening her on his Facebook page before the video began.
Have you watched the video? Just answer that.
Ive read MULTIPLE posts by his sister and of him and explanations. It is all over Twitter. I had one opinion UNTIL I saw the video.
Im sickened by the level of abuse on the poor dog. And Im a cat person.
Seriously you are complete wrong on this one.
LOL! Looks like he saying, “Leash laws ain’t to protect me from dogs! It’s to protect dogs from ME!”
>>ME (to the dog): Come here, puppy!
HER: He wont come to you.
ME: Well see about that... <<
I wasn’t going to say a word on this thread, although I was horrified at the attacks on this woman. Until you pointed out what that man tried to do, which was the first thing I’d noticed. Won’t say more. I’m not even a dog person. But I’m disgusted.
Yes I saw the video. Did you read what he said to her before the video started?
I hope you did. If you didn’t, I’m going to have to do something. And you are not going to like it.
I was just making the point that he threatened her before the video started. Did you just feel threatened by my comment? I bet you did. And you proved my point.
Shes played to win. By mentioning, African American, shes implying the police are racist. I dont think such an act reflects on her as much as it reflects on her understanding of reality.
Think or feel? Hell no. And your specific example falls under ‘sexual harassment’.
But if I got a DUI, or resisted arrest, or made an explicitly racist post, or one calling for violence? Hell yes they could fire me. It’s debatable they could fire you- explicitly - for a Trump 2020 bumper sticker, but unless you could PROVE that this was the reason, you’re hosed.
There are three exceptions to “At Will” employment:
1 ‘Public Policy’
For example, in most states, an employer can’t terminate an employee for filing a workers’ compensation claim after being injured on the job, or for refusing to engage in illegal activity at the request of an employer.
2-Implied Contract Exception
An employer may make oral or written representations to employees regarding job security or procedures that will be followed when discipline is imposed. *IF* you have this in writing, you might be good. This is a major part of the good that Unions do for the worker (when they bother to do it). IOW, if there’s a ‘book’ and they didn’t go ‘by the book’. Or they say ‘You’re good here unless you kill a partner”....
3- Covenant of Good Faith Exception
This exception means either that employer personnel decisions are subject to a “just cause” standard or that terminations in bad faith or motivated by malice are prohibited; It’s *just* possible that turning down the boss’s advances and being fired as a result can backfire on them, *IF* you have witnesses or other evidence.
So unless she has some evidence of a contract or commitment - and usually the paperwork you sign when hired explicitly states this is NOT the case - they can fire her for any or no reason.
Not that a good lawyer couldn’t rack up some hours on this, but there are often bits buried in any employment contract that no one ever reads that say ‘moral character’ or the like.
Lots and lots of Freepers are vehemently anti-union and strongly pro ‘Right To Work’, this is the other side of that.
Again, the above is just my understanding of why they damn well could fire her, or why an employer could fire me if I did something that brought them embarassment... I’m completely open to counter examples from real life.
Post 287 was meant for you.
maybe but it will be far too little and far too late
a person who is that spoiled rotten at that age is unfixable
Proof?
“And your specific example falls under sexual harassment.”
Actually, it doesn’t. You said since someone paid you something that they can extract under penalty of employment termination anything they want. I want to know if you have any limits on that.
We Americans have lost our sense of freedom, liberty, including personal property. We have been brainwashed into thinking an employer is a slave owner and we as employees are bound by whatever our slave master demands.
Just because you and someone exchanged labor for money one day doesn’t give them the right to demand anything of you after that with a promise that tomorrow you’ll do it again. Even dumber, by your own admission, they don’t even have to bring you back for work tomorrow.
Because of such ignorant nonsense, States have had to create laws to protect people from such employers. New York is one of those States, as is my State of Colorado.
The women in question is protected from termination by her employer in New York.
Sometimes people are just protecting themselves. That woman was scary.
Again you state what you think should be the truth without any references to back up your assertions.
That’s downright funny, I say the guy sounded frightened that she was advancing on him & you want me to prove it?
LOL
Listen to the recording yourself. Listen to the women work herself into a tantrum when the police dispatcher didn’t take her seriously enough. If your opinion is different fine but proof is not applicable.
Why are you talking about “my” limits.
No one gives a shit about what you or I think is “right”; it’s a matter of boring, dry, employment law; it either is, or is not under ‘employment at will’ and if it isn’t then it depends on state law. Save your outrage for someone else, please, I’m no fan of ‘Employment at will’ :-)
You’re making it some kind of moral argument about liberty or slavery. The law is what it is, and your or my opinion of it matters not at all.
My personal, moral, opinion is that she’s in the wrong legally, and very stupid for doing, this and her employer might look at it from that point- no matter what they think of racial issues or dog wakling vs bird watching they don’t want to employ an idiot. If she’s highly placed in the company it’s often different than if just a code jockey or tech, in my understanding.
Can they do this? well, again,as often as I see anti-union vitrol around here I’ll let someone else morally defend ‘Right to Work’ :-)
What is this supposed to mean?
Thank you for that photo! It adds a lot of important context.
That particular area of the park is especially for birds and bird watchers. Loose dogs frighten the birds. Central Park is no small place and there were plenty of other places to walk the dog with and without a leash.
If she was like a lot of other dog owners I’ve seen, she was hoping poochy would do their business in a brushy/woody place out of arm’s reach so she wouldn’t have to pick up after it.
She may typify it, but it did not start with this incident.
Out of respect for Mrs.Karen Pence, however, I wish freepers would avoid using this name as an insult.
