Hospitals on the Rochester campus are operating at 35 to 40 percent capacity, and surgical volume is at 25 to 30 percent of the level that was expected. About 60 percent of Mayo Clinic's business comes from elective procedures of the kind that are now on hold.
This is latest step in Mayo Clinic's financial stabilization strategy to address an anticipated $3 billion loss due to the pandemic forcing a temporary halt in all elective procedures and average medical appointments.

Talk about holding the mayo
But Cuccinelli just stated in a podcast a couple of days ago that part of the reason for so scaling back Trump’s originally broader plan to stop immigration in order to support American jobs was so we could bring in more healthcare workers.
Obamacare would have prevented all of this...

Which leads me to believe the DS is successfully controlling the information flow to the President about this ‘crisis’. Of course, it could just be the bureaucrats are incompetent, lazy, ignorant wastes of space that couldn’t hack it in the private sector, but I prefer to believe it’s malevolence on their part.
Some of the big ones announced that they were waiving deductibles and copays for COVID-19 patients. They also said they werent going to ask the government for a bailout to cover these enormous expenses.
So how are they going to recover this money theyre shelling out? Its easy ... theyll just pressure their affiliated hospitals to delay or even cancel a whole bunch of other medical procedures that would cost them a lot of money in claims.
Aren’t the insurance outfits cleaning up on this ?
Premiums are paid and services ARE NOT being rendered so in turn insurance IS NOT paying out.
Pure profit isn’t it ?
Probably to fill the chronically shortage of nurses. It is a tough job and pay is mediocre. I was married to a nurse for a long time.
Wait, you mean we shut down all medical services except COVID treatments but we don’t need these people after all??
You mean the fear mongers telling us to shut down all medical services were wrong??
What about all the medicare $$$ flowing from Uncle Sam to these insurance outfits ?
I can’t get cataract surgery til fall, if then.
A friend is an emergency room nurse at a large county hospital. She says traffic is down 50%. I found that strange - how can unplanned emergencies like heart attacks, home accidents, etc be down? She said many emergency room visits are not for emergencies.
Pay’s actually pretty good, at least up here in the US. But imports always lower pay.
Just pay American nurses!
You will love free healthcare by your federal government...
Check out how great the VA is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its insane to close down 60 % of our hospital care
insane!
and this is hurting many millions of people and their health
They only have our best interests at heart, because after all, they are the insurance companies. I'm sure they'll gladly forgo their profits so that we stay physically and financially healthy.
Isn’t that the truth! We lose thousands of hospital employees, then have a real pandemic, which will be really bad, hospitals will actually be overwhelmed
Oh, and stop requiring watered-down bachelor’s degrees for basic nursing.
Far better to have rigorous two-year programs than BS BS’s, if you will.
If it’s the only capable medical institution in an area expecting a massive overflow of covid patients, this might make sense. Otherwise, if they don’t have a problem with patients and/or staff spreading the virus, elective procedures should be back on the menu. (If patients themselves want to still put something off til later, that’s fine.)
