CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — A local family decided to have their father try the anti-malaria drug showing promise as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

Channel 11 first told you about 76-year-old Bob Schrecengost last week, when another patient at his nursing home, Caring Heights Community Care and Rehab Center in Coraopolis, tested positive for COVID-19.

This weekend, his family got the news that he, too, tested positive.

"It was extremely difficult for all of us in my house to hear the news,” said his daughter, Lisa Smarra.

Smarra visits her dad outside his window at Caring Heights every day. He has dementia, so she is tasked with making his medical decisions.

Smarra first heard hydroxychloroquine touted as a possible COVID-19 treatment during a presidential briefing. But while the drug shows signs of promise, clinical studies are still underway. She discussed the risks with her dad’s doctor.

“He has dementia, so she is tasked with making his medical decisions.”

I’ve been doing this for my dementia/cancer patient Dad for a full decade, now.

I know the Enemy Media wants to tug at some heartstrings here, but it really IS an easy choice.

When Dad was ‘lucid’ did you HAVE the important talk concerning his future care and wishes? Did he just RANDOMLY appoint you to make his medical decisions, or does he trust your judgement?

If he has Do Not Resuscitate in his medical records, or wears a bracelet, then DON’T give him the drug.

If his last cogent wish was to be kept alive at all costs, then GIVE give him the drug!

If nothing else, our younger generation had BETTER learn from this whole BS situation and get right with a parent you’ll be in charge of in the future.

And get your Wills in order, too. Quit making it hard on those you leave behind!

Scary is hypoxia.

I’ll take a chance with GI inflammation. Hell, I’ll roll the dice on increased chance of prolonged QT interval.

“The risks include heart arrhythmia, kidney failure, serious liver problems.”

According to D. Daniel Wallace, preeminent rheumatologist, there are virtually zero side effects with current dosages prescribed. He was onOz today discussing.

He says everyone is conflating downside of Hydroxychloroquine with Chloroquine, which does have issues. But he said he’s prescribed many thousands of doses to thousands of patients, over 40 years, and has had zero significant issues. Also said you DON’T need an EKG before using, that he doesn’t know where that info is coming from. Says NOBODY in Rhumatology does EKGs before prescribing the drug.

He wrote the book on Lupus, literally. Says the stuff perfectly safe to use. Apparatus he recently sent a letter to FDA saying all this. Wish I could find a copy!!!

Worth watching episode on Oz.

The “scariest” side effect is possible eye damage after 10 years of taking it...in one percent of those taking it.

=> Stupid nonsense.

See my post #24 below. We’re being lied to, again. No EKG needed. No heart problems with Hydroxychloroquine.

He’s an idiot

I’ve taken HCQ so many times I’ve lost count.

Basically every time I’ve done training in Africa or Asia. Certainly every trip to India.

Oh darn, I guess that rules out opium and heroin too. When I go to the VA the vampires there always have trouble drawing blood from me. I tell the gals that this was why I always had trouble with my career as an intraveneous drug user. ...:)

Probably democraps. Soooo scary Truuuuump cure!

He’s 76 with dementia? Seems pretty cut and dry.....they should stop watching CNN.

Like the Pres. says, “what can it hurt to try?”
Does everything have to have the gov stamp of approval?
The gov approves dangerous drugs all the time.

“It was a scary choice”

Seems more like a no-brainer.

Not to be overly critical, given that she had to actually confront her choice and I’m just a bystander, but it seems like whe the choice is between something that has been reported to work and doing nothing and dying, the choice isn’t that difficult.

I like that she asked the doctor what would he do in the same situation.

That happened to me at the DENTIST when I was having a Crown...they gave me a certain medicine that made my heart race, but there is another one that does NOT make your heart race!

"He has not used this treatment in any other patients just yet,” Smarra said.

Bummer

"Ultimately, I asked him, I said, ‘If this was your father, would you prescribe it for your father?' And he said that he would,” Smarra said.

Good!

Government has no business making these sorts of decisions regardless of whether or not hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment for COVID-19. Inform citizens and the medical community regarding the drug’s effectiveness or lack thereof? Certainly. Telling people who may die from this virus that they cannot try hydroxychloroquine? No way!

No more nanny state!

“Scary” choice? You likely die from COVID or likely live from medicine.

To which I’ll add: Do NOT store wills or any important papers, like dnr, power of attorneys, etc. in a safety deposit box!
