WATCH: President Trump Reveals Why He Refuses to Issue a National Stay-at-Home Order

Video at link, end of article.

Every day, the White House Coronavirus Task Force briefs the nation on the Wuhan coronavirus, the federal government's response to the virus and the next steps that we, as a nation, must take. It seems like one continual question comes up: why doesn't President Donald Trump issue a national stay-at-home order, otherwise referred to as a national lockdown?

The president addressed that very issue during Saturday's briefing.

"Mr. President, you said you want to see as few lives lost as possible in the pandemic, but there are still eight governors, all Republicans, who have refused to issue these statewide stay-at-home orders," CNN's Jeremy Diamond asked. "Your own experts, including Dr. Fauci, have said stay-at-home orders are the most effective way to stop the spread of this virus, so why not do everything possible right now to do that?"

"We have a thing called the Constitution, which I cherish, number one. Number two, those governors, I know every one of them, they're doing a great job. They're being very, very successful with what they're doing," Trump replied. "And, as you know, I want governors to be running things. In some cases, we'll supersede."

President Trump really finds himself in a catch-22 situation. If he announced a national lockdown, people would freak out, saying he's taking away states' rights and abusing his power. Because he's not implementing this stay-at-home order, he's being accused of "not doing enough." Whatever decision he makes or doesn't make, someone would light him up.

We should be encouraging the federal government to support states to make the best decisions for its residents. It doesn't make sense for places like North Dakota to be on lockdown the same way New York or Washington State is. It's comparing apples to oranges.

If he announced a nationwide lockdown, he’d have to activate the national guard and mobilize the military in a way never before done. He would have to, because the federal government doesn’t have the manpower to enforce a nationwide lockdown order, separating families and moving massive numbers of people around the nation needlessly in order to keep other people from moving in ways they shouldn’t. There are laws about the limits of what the military can do in these missions, and extensive supply and logistic chains that would need to be established. ... all to accomplish what?

The only things it would do is add to the confusion, set up needless confrontations between citizens and military, and prolong the crisis. It would make Trump look incompetant and people would die, but the left only really ever cared about one of those things.

42 states are locked down to some extent, the 8 remaining have low cases of virus ....some of them produce much of our food

The petty media just cannot goad Trump into becoming a tyrant

I cheered and clapped when he said that. PDJT has more respect for our Constitution than any previous president I can think of. He made further comments about the states being "like countries" and about the appropriate executive authority of state's governors that I have never heard a politician speak of.

1. The Constitution and 2. Context and together THEY are the important things. Actually, even in the states, county by county lock downs would be better than statewide. In many northern NY counties the lockdowns might be unnecessary,

Not to mention that the same media talking heads who are demanding he do so would be calling him a dictator and demanding he be impeached once he did.

I think these anti-American Progressive "reporters" are trying to bait him into doing it so they can then call him a dictator. Trump has less inclination to be a dictator than any president in my memory.

I would have asked the putz faced reporter if he wanted me to override the decisions of the governors and if he thought I knew more than the governors about their states.

Hatred = not being able to keep cherished beliefs or make use of logic but being driven by purely negative emotion alone

Anyone filled with political hate right now is thus mentally incompetent and should not work in government or media. Cooler, logical heads need to prevail.

Thankfully Pres. Trump never falls for their malign tricks.

He has their number like no politician has ever had it before. :)

‘Whatever decision he makes or doesn’t make, someone would light him up.’

if Trump invented a cure for cancer tomorrow, he’d be lit up for waiting so long to do it...but, he went into with his eyes open, it’s the nature of the beast...

What provision of the constitution allows the federal government - in this case the executive - to issue a stay at home order.

This isn’t interstate commerce.

A stay at home advisory is enough, if we deem it necessary to go out despite the risk, we should not have to be hassled by a cop or a soldier.
We are still free people, supposedly.

He’s handling it exactly as he should..he understands that the 10th Amendment not only empowers the States, it also gives them loads of responsibility - and some are handling it well while others are the sort Kushner mentioned - not up to the task the voters elected them to be able to do...

Plus the fact. . .Federal powers are enumerated in the Constitution. . .and all powers not specific to the Federal government are reserved to the States. . AND TO THE PEOPLE. In other words, our consent cannot be overlooked. I think all such decrees for confining people to their homes are unconstitutional and should only be stated as advisories that the people can decide on their own.

Life has risks. No one knows when death will come. There is no estimate on how long life should last. Death is coming and is inexorable. The only thing we can control is to live by the principles that secure the blessings of liberty. Live for the false promise of a guaranteed long life or live free. . .that is the choice we are presently making. . or I should say. . is being made for us.
