The Democrat doubled down on remarks he made last week defending his decision -- or lack thereof -- not to cancel February 25 Mardi Gras events. He conceded that the raucous partying scene "likely" contributed to the spread of the virus in the New Orleans area, where health experts now say the next coronavirus "hot spot" is emerging. Just one day prior to the city's Mardi Gras festivities, the president said "the coronavirus is very much under control" before going on to tout the day's stock market gains.
Speaking on several Sunday morning TV news programs, Bel Edwards tried to re-focus the conversation on the state's need for respirators and federal government supplies rather than rehashing the past. He warned Louisiana's largest city will run out of ventilators by April 4 and hospital beds by April 10.
But Bel Edwards did confirm Sunday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- and all other federal government agencies -- made no mention of scaling back Mardi Gras celebrations over coronavirus concerns.

Remember the reaction to Trump suggesting the Olympics be postponed?
Of course, eventually they were postponed.
Just like Florida didnt close the beaches before spring break. How long DeBlasio wait to close the schools.
Katrina. Again.
Same ole Rat playbook..Limbaugh talking about it right now.
First of all, the governor’s name is Edwards, not Bel Edwards.
The last day that Mardi Gras could have been canceled was February 24. On that day there were only about fifty known cases in the entire USA. Other major events were not being canceled.
There’s a real hostility towards Louisiana and New Orleans at FR. Part of it is bitter incomprehension and part of it is racism. If Louisiana authorities missed the chance to get a head start on the virus, so did everyone else.
That's fine. But why are they blaming Trump, just like they blamed Bush, for things they were responsible for?
You can’t move buses without drivers.
Because that’s what they were doing in your state, right?
Hilarious. I actually thought the headline was mocking him, and I expected the source to be National Review or the Washington Examiner or some other convservative site.
It is HILARIOUS that Newsweak printed this headline with a straight face.
Kids: now that online school is in session wait until someone from the Federal Government tells you to do your homework. If not, and the teachers criticizes you, you can safely blame Trump.
What major events were being canceled in your region in mid to late February? Please be specific.
Where are they blaming Trump? Just yesterday Trump had friendly words of praise for Edwards.
To a certain extent, the Governor has a point. I don’t think anyone at the time was aware of how rapidly this virus would spread in the United States. If anyone would have told me on February 24 that most businesses would be closed and church services would be cancelled in March, I would have thought they were being overly alarmist.
My state diid not have a month long celebration with millions of people on the streets and in bars.
Because it took a period of 5 to 14 days for symptoms to crop up, many people traveling by airplanes were able to reenter the country, some of who were infected unbeknownst to anyone including the infected persons.
Lastly, because the CDC, for whatever reason, failed in producing a fault free test kit. It took awhile for that fact to become known as well, increasing even further the numbers allowed in who were infected, yet undetected.
So the government itself didn't know the full extent that this virus had been allowed to spread undetected. Had they known they would have alerted the state to cancel all Mardi Gras activities. They would have also alerted the entire country at that time as well.
These events do not just occur in New Orleans for those who may not know. They occur around the entire state. New Orleans is just the most promoted and the biggest in the state, and provides a big chunk of revenue for the city itself.
Did y’all cancel major sport events? Anything? Can you name any other part of the country that was canceling major events at that time?
What’ve you got?
What major events were being canceled in your region in mid to late February? Please be specific.
The point of my post is that Edwards is now trying to blame the federal government for his not banning Mardi Gras. He made, what we now see with 20:20 hindsight an unfortunate non-call. He could have just as easily said, “If I knew then, what I know now, I’d’ve canceled it.”
I’m not blaming him for his not seeing it coming, but trying to blame others doesn’t seem right to me.
Please tell the mayor and the governor to wash their hands with soap and to scrub for 20 seconds.
Trust me, I understand Louisiana. I have driven on I-10.
In my state a music festival was canceled.
Towns and cities here in the Northeast didnt wait for the Feds to tell them to cancel their St. Patrick Day Parades. Some parades like the one in NYC bring in a lot of money but they were canceled anyway.
