As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, some drugs are showing promise in treating patients with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. There are no approved treatments or vaccines for COVID-19, but researchers are testing a slew of existing drugs to see if they could work. One of those drugs is called chloroquine, a widely used anti-malaria pill that was first approved in the US in 1949. Countries including China, South Korea, and Belgium have added it to COVID-19 treatment guidelines as anecdotal reports have suggested that it might work.

The key word in the teaser is “anecdotal”.

The quinine derivatives are active against flagellated protozoans by disrupting metabolic process. Virii have no metabolic processes.

I’ve taken it for several deployments. Never had any side effects, but I’ve only taken it to avoid malaria.

They will need to figure out the dosing but I would take it and not worry about POSSIBLE side effects.

Wonder if this combo would have worked for the first SARS virus.

Shame we didn’t try it then.

I think guzzling about 6 quarts of tonic water a day would give an adequate dose.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Watch for the run on Tonic Water now!

Here is what’s great about hydroxychloroquine in combination with other therapeutic agent like Azithromycin — THE STUDIES HAVE BEEN REPLICATED in France, USA, Japan, China and South Korea with similar results.

When the predictive number is under 0.5% for how well a study can be replicated by others, that is considered GOLDEN. If predictive number is .01%, you are 50 times better of than what is considered golden.

The said study by Dr. Raoult is .0025% in its p value ( predictive value ). This means that this drug is nearly 100% effective in killing the coronavirus (better than 99% ) and this is also the chances that any scientist who follow the same protocol will replicate the results again and again.

What does this mean?

Hydroxychloroquine are already in every pharmacy shelf in this country, so the drug will NOT BE Expensive.

They also discovered that when you mix Hydroxychloroquine with azithromycin, they have the best results on Coronavirus patients. If this is true, and studies show that it is, the goal should be to get these two drugs to as many doctors treating Covid-19 patients as possible.

“Chloroquine side effects:”

Joe Biden must be taking this stuff; he demonstrates a lot of the symptoms.

Was yours a weekly or a daily dose? I have known people who took the daily medication, Mefloquine, and they HATED it. They suffered nausea, diarrhea, vivid nightmares, and a general feeling of anger.

Chloroquine is taken weekly. Most of the people I know who took chloroquine reported no ill effects. As with all such things, your mileage may vary.

I believe you.

As a pharmacist, I’ve spoken to many patients who reported side effects I’ve had to look up. Everyone is different and some individuals react differently than the rest of the “pack.”

Bottom Line: Chloroquine may have given Navy Vet the GI’s, but it didn’t effect me or the vast majority of other users.

2nd Bottom Line: I bet you would rather have the worst case of the GI’s than Captain Tripps.

Absolutely, and MONITOR AND REPORT THE RESULTS. You can't run a proper clinical trial in the middle of an epidemic, but you can still make an effort to collect good quality data.

"Pour me another gin and tonic."

"I wish. The dosage is too low."

Well, maybe we just need to make more gin and tonics. I volunteer to be part of that experiment. In the name of science, of course- Honey, I'm only doing this for a better world.

That list isn’t much different (or much scarier) than the lists for standard issue antibiotics such as amoxicillin.
