White House working to send checks to Americans to fight coronavirus’ economic impact: Mnuchin

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday the Trump administration is working with Congress on a plan that would send checks to Americans in an effort to blunt the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on the economy.

“We are looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin told reporters. “Americans need cash now and the president wants to get cash now. And I mean now, in the next two weeks.

“We want to make sure Americans get money in their pockets quickly,” Mnuchin said at a White House briefing on the virus. “We want to make sure small business owners have access to the funds. We want to make sure airlines, hotels. We have an entire package.”

He said President Trump has also floated the idea of a payroll tax holiday.

Ok, if that’s true than it amounts to a gift to working people only. It also seems to mean an employed person will not be subject to any income tax when it comes time to file except on that portion of his income which was subject to withholding before the holiday went into effect..

And it favors higher income workers who likely don't need it as much.

I’m wondering if the same won’t happen with the “free” $1000.

Buying votes at $1,000/vote is as evil as buying votes at $50,000/vote.

Payroll tax idea is better. I’d rather have money I actually earned.

I am no socialist and I despise government giveaways. This situation, however, is unique. They government (be it federal, state, or local) has basically ordered businesses to shut down nationwide. If you are a salaried employee your company is going to try to figure something out because they can't lay people off at will legally. But if you are a bartender, you're out of work. No pay check = no payroll tax savings. What do they do? ? These aren't people who sit around and demand handouts, they are people who have jobs that they work at and suddenly they are told "no work for you until future time".

Those people need to eat too. What do they do if they don't have savings?

Finally someone gets it.

“Buying Votes”.

Cause, FRiends; THAT is exactly what is going on here.

Democrats ought to be screaming mad. But what can they do? They set into motion this financial mess.

People should have six months expenses saved up, just in case.

It is the constant hammering of interest rates by the Federal Reserve that has destroyed the incentive (3% or more annual interest) to be personally financially responsible.

Any federal loan to an airline should be on a federal priority basis and secured by airport slots.

Easy to say. But out here in reality it doesn’t work like that. Especially for people in gig life. Their income is sporadic at best, and low even when it’s good. Plus there’s the fact that they aren’t just out the income. A friend of mine made 5 grand last year at TFOB, but that was selling merch, in order to sell merch this year she had to buy merch, now she has merch, and nowhere to sell. Assuming events start up again she won’t have to buy merch for those, but until then, she’s out that money with no real window to make it back. And there’s nothing else in the pipeline that gets 100,000 people. Life is waaaaay more complicated than pat sentences.

This is really needed. This is a National emergency. Real money us needed to will help in easing real burdens in this temporary disaster.

To offset this expense, the salaries and benefits that go to Congress Critters and their entire staff(s) should be IMMEDIATELY suspended.

Totally agree with that! Imagine the cries and howls... democRATs would be the loudest, of course.

Jaba the Hut Governor of Illinois will probably require the $1000 to be turned into the state treasury. “We know better how to spend it than you”.

Expensive but hey, it could play well. At this point winning the election is about 1000% more important than the deficit.

So when is Yang gonna endorse Trump? I won’t hold my breath.
