“Hey, Thelma, let me drive!”
NO MORE GORGEOUS DRIVE....SCARY UT BEAUTIFUL.
Drove it from Los Angeles to San Jose.
Beautiful, but you have to drive carefully at all times.
Ive driven that road many times, mostly taking friends and customers touring California. The area around Big Sur is one of my favorite spots in the world. its not at all dangerous - unless one is driving dangerously.
Just typical common sense, and adapting ones driving to the road and visibility conditions is enough.
My son and I drove it about 6 years ago in his Alfa Romeo - what a beautiful road!
Most beautiful scenery in the USA, but gotta keep your eyes on the road.
Gravity wins another round.
I think the answer lies in rental and Camaro.
Man, you haven’t been on many roads out west (especially mountain) if you think that’s scary. Very mild, IMO.
Well that link crashed my hard drive.
Nothing one bit scary unless car or truck on inside crossed over the line (like passing in no passing zone) took out car on cliff (water) side.
Scarier road: Independent Pass in Colorado!
I’ve ridden my sport motorcycles from end to end of that road many times. Sometimes sedately, sometimes absolutely hauling ass. It is not dangerous at all, if you just slow the heck down.
There are lots of great pullouts that allow sightseeing, stretching and letting other motorists pass by if you feel like poking along. Slower speeds allow you to take in the some of the great world God has given us.
I grew up in Southwestern Missouri. Many times I rode the highway south in northern Arkansas to the Siloam Springs area.
The road part of the way down that way is very windy in part.
One time I found the Mount Wilson (Southern California, Angeles Crest) road gate open to Rincon over above Pasaden / Azusa. I drove across that road. It was about ten miles as I recall.
It was a dirt road, and at times I was probably five to ten feet from a 500-1000 foot drop. Now that was scary.
When I drove Highway 1 all the way down the California coastline, it didn’t seem all that dangerous to me.
Ping.
Bitchin’
Years ago when I was young and stupid I was getting gas in Big Sur and had an open beer on the console. Another driver saw it. I drove off and a few miles later a CHP was right behind me with the siren and lights flashing. From a bull horn I heard “please pull over around the next bend”. So I pulled over thinking oh shit....
He flew past me....
You don’t think the fact it was a rental Camaro that had something to do with it?
A Camaro is a bad car. Probably being driven too fast.
Dangerous? meh, been there, done that. Very pretty drive.
Try driving Independence Pass, then tell me which is more dangerous.
Start watching at about 2:25 mark.

Drove it in 1976 on a Kawasaki triple, lots of fun.
What? No picture of “Thelma and Louise”?
