Bloomberg surpasses $400M in ad spending for 2020 race

Michael Bloomberg has spent more than double his nearest Democratic presidential primary rival on campaign ads.

Data from political ad tracker Kantar/CMAG shows the former New York City mayor spent roughly $417.7 million as of Sunday morning, which according to CNN's David Wright, also includes futures reservations.

The amount is 10 times as much as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who leads the delegate race in the contest, have each spent. Here's a look at ad spending through today (including future reservations:

Bloomberg: $417.7 million Steyer: $193.6 million Sanders: $41.8 million Buttigieg: $40 millon Warren: $21.4 million Biden: $12.3 million Klobuchar: $10.6 million Gabbard $5.4 million

— David Wright (@DavidWright_7) February 16, 2020

The closest candidate to Bloomberg in spending is Tom Steyer, a fellow billionaire who is self-funding his campaign, who poured about $193.6 million into ads.

As Bloomberg's spending has increased, so has his poll numbers. The former mayor has nearly doubled his support from 8% to 14% in just two weeks according to, RealClearPolitics national average.

Bloomberg's rise has coincided with Joe Biden's stumbling in early state contests. The former vice president's support has dropped nearly 10% in the last two weeks.

Bloomberg has faced criticism from his fellow contenders for buying ads instead of trying to qualify for debates. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the billionaire's strategy is "to hide behind airwaves."

Where’s antifa and the leftists screaming about rich white dudes now?

Bernie bros hate Bloomberg, and are already super pissed he appears to be buying the nomination. It's enjoyable to watch.

400 million in ads versus one tweet from President Donald John Trump and all bloomie got out of it is that people think he’s a dwarf.

From now on if any Trump voters see mini Mike, they need to start shouting

Mini Mike! Stand up Mini Mike!!

As Joe Biden would say, “Yeah, stand up Mike, and pull out your wallet...oh, he is standing up

That’s not counting the thousands of political organizers he’s hired at salaries in the $300K range for the capos and $72K for the soldiers. If the blended amount is $150K and he’s hired 2000 people, that’s an annual run rate of $300m, which he has pledged to fund, regardless of whether he gets the nomination. This is basically a carbon copy of his NYC mayoral runs - saturation ad buys that drown out his opponents combined with an army of paid GOTV organizers and barrages of endorsements from influential local pols. For instance, he has secured endorsements from Houston’s, San Francisco’s and DC’s mayors.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/13/us/politics/bloomberg-campaign-cash.html
[Entry-level field organizing work for Mr. Bloomberg, for example, pays $72,000 annually — nearly twice what other campaigns have offered. In under 12 weeks, Mr. Bloomberg’s operation has grown to a staff of thousands, with more than 125 offices around the country and a roster of slick events featuring swag, drinks and canapés.

Mr. Trippi called substantial pay such as what Mr. Bloomberg was offering plausible for a campaign’s staff members in key early-voting states, like Iowa or New Hampshire, but highly unusual as a standard for employees across regions — and even more so for the apparent sense of job security through the fall. “That’s never happened before,” he said.

Reflecting similar premiums, Mr. Bloomberg’s state communications directors and state political directors uniformly receive $12,000 monthly, according to the campaign, while state press secretaries make $10,000 monthly and the campaign’s national political director commands $30,000 a month, or $360,000 annually.

James A. Thurber, a professor of government who founded the Campaign Management Institute at American University, said money was an unlikely motivator in campaign work, but he called some of Mr. Bloomberg’s spending necessary.

“Since he’s gotten in so late, he’s got to pay above-market salaries to get good people to jump in at all levels,” Dr. Thurber said. “You can’t win a campaign on an air war,” he said, referring to a blitz of advertising. “You’ve got to have a ground war. He knows that, so he’s buying the ground war.”

“I can’t tell you the pleasure of having someone call me and ask, ‘Who are important people in the community?’” said Patricia Halfen Wexler, a venture capitalist who spoke in support of Mr. Bloomberg at one of his recent rallies, “and to not have to think, ‘Who can give money?’”]

After a couple of dozen exposures I believe the ads will start pissing people off.

You really don’t want to piss voters off.

I don't think Bloomberg is a dwarf and his height only briefly enters my mind when someone mentions it.

I think Bloomberg is a totalitarian control freak who desires the power to micromanage the lives of Americans to the point that he can dictate what food someone is allowed to buy when they eat at. A restaurant.

That is what matters.

Another win for Trump. He is getting the economy rolling with dem money to the tune of $742,800,000.00. And still rising.

That's a nice way of looking at it. And, since Bloomberg has sworn to spend at least $2 Billion on his campaign over a relatively short period of time, that should give a nice little bump to the economies of battleground states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
President Trump cheerfully and gratefully welcomes any and all stimuli to the economy which will help in his reelection. :)

This is just a fun way for him to cycle money back into the DNC I’d say.

Primarily putting his ads and time into left wing friendly stuff, so that they can in turn donate his money with a little pay off, to the DNC.

Crafty if this is so.
