Bloomberg could kill America’s car culture if elected president
New York Post ^ | February 15, 2020 | Steve Cuozzo

Forget “economic justice,” climate change and foreign policy. The big issue for America if Michael Bloomberg wins the presidency is:

Will he install bike lanes on Interstate highways?

Maybe you scoff. Of course our former mayor and his transportation sidekick Janette Sadik-Khan couldn’t possibly inflict their cycling mania from sea to shining sea. But back when Bloomberg took office in 2002, the idea that the Big Apple might one day be crisscrossed with space-hogging bike lanes seemed ridiculous. Today, the city has 1,260 traffic-snarling miles of them.

They’re a barrel of fun for cycling enthusiasts, a tiny minority of New Yorkers who still whine there aren’t enough of them. And admittedly, if you cram a bunch of bikers onto the Brooklyn Bridge at rush hour, the city’s cyclists do resemble an invading army on the march.

But the numbers tell a different story. While advocates boast that 86,000 people pedal their way to work every day in town — a 50 percent jump over 10 years ago — they ignore that roughly 3.6 million of us commute to work by other means, according to the US Census.

Meanwhile, all those new bike lanes took stuff away from everyone else — including roads previously used for cars and trucks, and thousands of parking spaces.

Folks in states that are less hostile to cars than New York City — which is to say, just about every state — will choke on the changes Bloomberg and Sadik-Khan could bring to their way of life.

My comment earlier today at jpost.com:
Bloomberg's legacy to me is more bums on the streets and avenues that have been reduced from four lanes to three to give bicycles and pedestrians a lane. (When I was younger I regularly rode a bicycle from the East 60s down to Washington Square. I am not anti-bicycle; and pedestrians have the sidewalks.)

"Bloomberg could kill America’s car culture if elected president"

He may be too late. My nephews and their friends ain't the least bit interested in getting their licenses much less getting a job to buy their first car. And even less interest in working on their own vehicles.

At the age of 12, I was reading Hot Rod, Car Craft magazine and looking at the Want ads and rolling by the used car lots dreaming of buying the used muscle cars of the mid sixties to and early seventies fantasying of all the mods I would do if only I had a license, the pik slip and the money to chrome, bolt and drill out a real ball busting rod rod.

Nowadays kids just call uber and or just stay at home on the weekends playing video games like 'Grand Theft Auto"

Perhaps Bloomberg’s campaign to vacate the Second Amendment should be used as a guide here. Those advocates of automobiles have much the same fervor to keep their automobiles as the Second Amendment supporters.

Mike is facing a LOT of headwind on this one. Maybe even more than his proposed gun grab.

If only because there are way more people who own cars than own guns.

You sound like me. Driving a clunker in my late teens taught me a lot. Just keeping it on the road with little or no money taught a number of important life lessons. Like how to fabricate part of an exhaust system with flexible tubing and coffee cans or your car breaks down 100+ miles from home and it’s 10:30 at night. So you are 19 and you have a problem you have to solve right now on your own. Then there are countless social issues that surround a car. Taking away car ownership is a very big deal with countless implications.
Bloomberg is another arrogant controlfreak and the power has the more control he will hunger for. We better pray this SOB never gets near the White House. The climate BS is Taylor made for his type.

The street down the hill was scheduled to be resurfaced. They started the job. They had painted a block or so, and it became evident they intended to morph the street from a four lane to a two lane, so they could have a bicycle lane on each side.

That very night I hot-footed it down to the city hall, and addressed the city council.

I explained at even at four lanes, that street backs up during such hour, and that changing it to a two lane would seriously screw things up.

Luckily one of the city council members lived off that street and uses it regularly. She backed up what I had said.

That first block was repainted to four lanes, and the project to add bike lanes was dropped just like that.

I ride my bike on that roadway, but the cars and trucks have first dibs > IMO.

if Michael Bloomberg wins ... Will he install bike lanes on Interstate highways?

That's reason enough to vote AGAINST him.

No doubt there is a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment coming up with a rig because you can’t afford the part when you’re young or the part isn’t made any more when you’re old.
