The Democratic-led Virginia House of Delegates has passed legislation that seeks to award the states electoral votes to the presidential candidate that wins the national popular vote in an election.
The measure, also known as House Bill 177, passed the legislative chamber in a 51-46 vote on Tuesday after clearing the bodys Privileges and Elections Committee in a vote last week.
If the legislation is passed by the Senate, where Democrats also hold control, and signed into law by the governor, Virginia would subsequently be entered into the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Under the compact, Virginia agrees to award its electoral votes to the presidential ticket that receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, a bill summary states. The compact goes into effect when states cumulatively possessing a majority of the electoral votes have joined the compact.

States have standing. Thanks for playing, we have fabulous prizes for you. Go back to chasing Obama's birth certificate.
So voters in CA will decide who gets VA’s electoral votes ? It will end up in the SC in no time.
Except there is no such thing as the "National Popular Vote". States routinely do not count absentee, military, or provisional ballots if there are not enough to make up the difference in the vote total for that state. If the election results were to come from a national tally, all this people would automatically become disenfranchised.
Violation of Equal Protection. Unconstitutional.
His alleged birth certificate .jpg says his father was a foreign national.
That was enough to disqualify him.
An assertion not supported by any court decision, federal ruling, regulation, statute or anything else. It’s not even on the back of the Corn Flakes box.
Our Founding Fathers gave smaller states the EC so they wouldn't be locked out by larger states. Now the smaller states are willing to give up their votes to bigger states.
It's troubling how short-sighted people are.
Liberals believe Trump is a dictator yet liberals are willing to surrender their vote and their future votes to those more powerful.

Chief Justice Waite
“The Constitution does not in words say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners. Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of their parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first.”

If he even wins by 10,000, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact will lose some states. I doubt that is even Constitutional.
IF the Republicans ever regain control (I know, I know) they should vote to award EC votes by Congressional District and strip the Metro areas of the power to call statewide Presidential Elections.
So if 10 states voted for Bernie by a 99:1 ratio, and the rest cumulatively gave a 1-vote plurality to Trump, then if those 10 states were in the compact all of their EVs would go to Trump.
Look, I hate Bernie’s politics with a red-hot passion, but that just isn’t right. The EVs of each state are supposed to be based on the vote IN EACH PARTICULAR STATE. This is - regardless of which way EVs are shifted - a disenfranchisement of a lot of voters. I cannot see that it can pass muster at the Supreme Court.
I love it. It's my favorite citation, the standard for the clueless who think that the Supreme Court defined the term, Natural Born Citizen. This case was about sufferage, nothing to do with citizenship. You clearly don't know how to read Supreme Court decisions. No more fabulous prizes for you. BTW, I've told you that before.
And the Constitution says:????????
“States can award their EV to whomever they want. Its constitutional.”
I think you’re right, each state handles it however they want.. What will probably happen in 2020 is that Trump wins the electoral college and the popular vote, so he would actually get Virginia’s electoral votes even if Virginia votes democrat.
When Trump wins the popular vote, you can bet VA will come up with an excuse as to why they won’t award him their electoral votes.
That's as I read it too. In theory the Virginia state government could simply say "our electoral votes will go to the Democrat candidate no matter what" and get away with it, at least until the legislators started dangling from lamp posts.
Hey,
If they can do this then let’s say Trump can run for a third term. 1st one don’t count on account of the failed impeachment and all.
The party of the people is saying to heck with the way the people of Virginia vote.
Well, this looks like a pisser if you are a voter in Virginia. California, Oregon, Washington and New York will dictate the game.
Bad idea Virginia.
Sounds unconstitutional to me, as this effectively nullifies the votes of the persons voting within the state.
This has been brought up before and it will go nowhere.
