SHANGHAI, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Health authorities in Hubei, the Chinese province at the centre of the coronavirus epidemic, said on Friday that deaths from the disease had risen to 204, a sharp increase that underscores concerns about the virus from global health officials.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said late Thursday that it was declaring the outbreak a global emergency, as cases spread to at least 18 countries.
The latest Hubei figures take the total death toll for China to at least 212. China's National Health Commission is expected to release new national figures later on Friday.
There have been a further 1,220 cases detected in Hubei by end of Jan. 30, taking the total for the province alone to close to 6,000, Hubei's health commission said.
Nearly 100 cases have emerged in other countries, spurring cuts to travel, outbreaks of anti-China sentiment in some places, and a surge in demand for protective face masks.
In Hubei some 60 million people are living under virtual lockdown as China seeks to contain the epidemic.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, praised China's response in a news conference in Geneva on Thursday evening but said the WHO was concerned about the virus spreading to countries that did not have the resources to deal with it.
"The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China but because of what is happening in other countries. Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems," he said.
The WHO move will trigger tighter containment and information-sharing guidelines to all countries, but may disappoint Beijing, which had expressed confidence it can beat the "devil" virus.
China's U.N. ambassador, Zhang Jun, said Beijing was assessing the declaration.

What kind of numbers would you consider to be more alarming? What do you think we should be watching for that would indicate that this is more of a crisis? I’m no medical expert, just remember previous news coverage of flu outbreaks and have read some on the 1918 flu.

Remember, that is the deaths that they are admitting too. If the people died before tested do you think china would put them in the total?

China knows what they are dealing with. They just have not been honest with the world...yet.
In a week the number of reported cases went from hundreds to thousands. The reported cases went from China to around the the world.
Personally I believe that this was a biological weapon that escaped from the lab (most likely accidental).
Is it hype, is it overblown? Perhaps. But the safest thing to do is to treat it like it is real. If it turns out not to be a big deal, so what, it would be good practice until the time it becomes real.

Has anyone offered the opinion that China did this deliberately with the eye toward infecting the United States? Yes, I know that many Chinese will die, but in a country with more than a billion people too many - I hardly think they care.
Face it, Trump has caused (in my opinion) Xi to lose face but forcing him to back down to his demands. I doubt seriously that China would sign on to the agreement if a weak Bush was in office.
So, is there any possibility in the realm of imagination that this could be an attack on the United States?

Rumors floating about that China mulling how to shift to admisdion that this bug did escape from the bioweapons research facilty, whether by accident or someone(s) selling test animals on the side for quick cash. Frankly, I’d rather hear the truth of it, no matter how bad or embarrassing to them, and proceed more clearly to deal with it. People doing dumb things is universal and to be expected. Not being straight with the rest of the world is less forgivable.
So, if all I care about is the USA, then maybe I start to worry if the number of deaths in this country from this virus hits 3,900.

It’s hard to determine the actual death ratio, since the Chinese either lie or don’t know it themselves, but on the whole it seems pretty normal for a bad strain of the flu.
I think this was something for the USA, being souped up in a lab in China, that accidentally or deliberately got out.
Why would China do this. After all every time I see many people in China they have masks on in general.
Just like the Fentanyl coming in from China. To me that is a deliberated and calculated attack by China. It is declaration of war and kills most people. It more addictive that heroin and kills the users over time. With in 1 to 2 years. This is probably China’s modern version of the Boxer Rebellion to get back at the West.
BTW, Mexicans are no longer the number 1 immigrants coming into California. It is now China. How many infected people are coming into cities full of turds (a pandemic waiting to happen ) like San Francisco?
If it’s no worse than the annual flu, why are the healthcare workers wearing spacesuits? We don’t do that here with our influenza patients.

We are also dealing with a man made weaponized virus. Will know for sure over the next 30 days.
I would strongly suggest getting iodine, take vitamin D3, vitamin B Complex, lots of Vitamin C, and even getting colloidal silver as a back up. That should help keep your immune system strong

How many reported dead vs how many reported recovered?
By that metric the fatality rate is about 55%
Americans will not care until the price of iPhones doubles. This is a huge blow to the Chinese national ego. A huge loss of face. They look like chumps eating soup made from bats from the infamous Wuhan wild animal market.
I’ll bet the Nips and the South Koreans are getting a good giggle at how hapless their rival is.
