BREAKING NEWS: U.S.-led military coalition says it will WITHDRAW from Iraq after country's parliament voted for anti-ISIS troops to leave in wake of Qassem Soleimani's death

The U.S. military informed its counterparts in Baghdad on Monday it was preparing for 'movement out of Iraq,' a day after the Iraqi parliament urged the government in a non-binding resolution to oust foreign troops.

The head of the U.S. military's Task Force Iraq, Brigadier General William Seely, sent a letter to the head of Iraq's joint operations command, a copy of which was seen by several news agencies.

'Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, [the coalition] will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement,' Seely wrote.

'We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure,' the letter said.

Hopefully, the Iraqis and Iranians go back to their traditional activity of killing each other, which keeps down the populations of both countries.

~~~
No it doesn’t appear that way. It would seem that Iran is in control of parts of Iraq, including factions of their government. I wouldn’t expect any sore of stalemate version of stability between Iraq and Iran. This will appear to make Iran even stronger in the region.
When/if that bares out, it will be difficult to resist the temptation to become interventionalists again.
Also, you will witness they hipocrite democrats and media claiming that we can’t let Iran get away with such power grabs, and of course, it will be all Trump’s fault. Completing the full boomerang of turning the MSM into pseudo-neocons.
RE: Didn’t the Philippines give Reagan some grief and told him to get our service people out of the country. And he did. Perfect!
Yep, it happened under Papa Bush and the withdrawal accelerated with the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
Years later, with the Philippines facing an insurgency, following the bases’ closure, the Visiting Forces Agreement (Philippines – United States) (VFA) was signed which contained guidelines for the conduct and protection of American troops visiting the Philippines and stipulated the terms and conditions for the American military to enter Philippine territory.
The VFA is a reciprocal agreement in that also outlines the requirements for Philippine troops visiting the United States.
The Visiting Forces Agreement led to the establishment of the Balikatan (Shoulder to shoulder) exercises, as well as a variety of other cooperative military measures.
The Balikatan exercises are designed to maintain and develop the security relationship between the two countries’ armed forces through crisis-action planning, through enhanced training to conduct counterterrorism operations, and through promoting interoperability of the forces.
To make a long story short — THE AMERICAN FORCES ARE STILL THERE.
Yeah, but without Clark AFB and Subic Naval Yard.
IIRC, we were ordered out of Philippines in 1986 when Marcos was overthrown & the new government blamed our relations with Marcos for the murder of Benigno Aquino in 1983.
Mount Pinatubo erupting was bad timing for Manila.
UPDATE: WASHINGTON, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The United States has no plans to pull out militarily from Iraq, Defense Secretary Mark Esper told Pentagon reporters on Monday, following reports by Reuters and other media of a U.S. military letter about a withdrawal.
“There’s been no decision whatsoever to leave Iraq,” Esper said, when asked about the letter, adding there had also been no plans issued to prepare to leave.
“I don’t know what that letter is ... We’re trying to find out where that’s coming from, what that is. But there’s been no decision made to leave Iraq. Period.”
Esper added the United States was still committed to countering Islamic State in Iraq, alongside America’s allies and partners.
