WASHINGTON The day after the House cast historic votes to impeach President Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi put an abrupt halt on the proceedings, holding back from sending the charges to the Republican-led Senate in a politically risky bid to exert influence over the contours of an election-year trial.
With some leading Democrats pushing to delay transmittal of the articles and others advocating that they be withheld altogether, the limbo is likely to persist until the new year. The House left town on Thursday for a two-week holiday recess without taking the votes to appoint impeachment managers, which is required to start the process in the Senate.
We are ready, said Ms. Pelosi, who has said she would not send the charges or name the lawmakers who would prosecute the case against Mr. Trump until she was certain of a fair process for a Senate trial. When we see what they have, we will know who and how many we will send over.
By withholding the articles, Ms. Pelosi is hoping that Mr. Trump who is eager for a trial to present his defense and clear his name will put pressure on Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, to commit to Democratic demands, including the ability to call witnesses during the trial.
But the speakers strategy is also a gamble. Having toiled to present the House impeachment inquiry and the votes on Wednesday as a somber duty rooted in the Constitution, Ms. Pelosi risks appearing to politicize the matter if she withholds the charges for negotiating leverage.
And Mr. McConnell was entirely unmoved by Ms. Pelosis tactics, delivering a speech on Thursday evening in which he appeared barely able to contain his amusement at what he regarded as the speakers missteps.

Trial in doubt...
AHHhhhhhhhh, the deviants who work there must be so disappointed.
I didn”t read it and it still makes me want to vomit.
Withholding the impeachment from the Senate is all about the failing health of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Nancy Pelosi will forward the paperwork to Mitch McConnell as Ginsburg lies dying and will then say Trump should not be allowed to nominate a replacement until after the trial.
McConnell then will need to set a date on the second Monday following the submission of the paperwork and hold the trial with or without House “managers”.
I agree. What is she going to do?
That’s one thing about the dems - their sedition is always two steps ahead.
Election fraud is their specialty. It’s the only thing they’re good at.
Mostly because the GOP lets them get away with it.
And Feldman is the anti-Trump constitution law professor who advocated Trump being impeached. What an epic backfire on Pelosi.
The Senate should go to court for an order that the House proceed.
The court has no jurisdiction to be involved in this at all except that once the trial is underway the Chief Justice can rule on motions. Mitch is running things now. Its his show and IMHO he can proceed without Pelosis blessing.
“I am counting the DAYS until I can vote in Fall of 2020. FOR Trump and AGAINST ANY DEM on my ticket!
Show of hands? :)”
yes. it’s imperative that we vote for ALL GOP candidates, no matter how rancid they might be, because the Dems are a thousand times worse. we’re not talking about the Dems being just a little worse than the GOP, but orders of magnitude worse ...
Yes but none of that matters to their narrative
Nanzi is Schiffing her panties!
Must be related to this, somehow:
I didn’t write that
Why waste perfectly good toilet paper?
“McConnell then will need to set a date on the second Monday following the submission of the paperwork and hold the trial with or without House managers.”
Not according to senate rules.
I don’t think Nan really wanted to do it, but had no choice, since the whole reason for the 2018 mid-terms was Impeachment, and the base was fired up as a result.
Good usage of malarkey, dude!
Yep on all. Plus a Senate trial would undoubtedly expose Dem / Deep State crimes to voters who havent been paying attention.
