Republican says quick move to dismiss impeachment charges would likely fail

Republican, John Cornyn, said on Wednesday that should the U.S. House of Representatives vote to impeach President Donald Trump, he doubts a motion in the Senate to immediately dismiss the charges would succeed.

Cornyn, who spent years as the Senate’s no. 2 Republican, said such a motion would not receive the 51 votes necessary in the Republican-controlled Senate to pass. He said he was confident that ultimately, a vote in the Senate to remove Trump from office would fail.

I don’t think they will vote to impeach because they would likely lose the House.

But if they do then I say drag it out in the Senate for months. Bring every one of the crooks before the Senate and have them testify.

I don’t want the charges to be dismissed. I want a trial that lasts right up to Election Day ... with President Trump campaigning all over the country while a bunch of @ssholes waste their time on this charade in the Senate every day.

Like those endless votes to abolish obamacare failed? Those votes that, oddly, stopped when they had a president that would actually sign it. :)

I very much look at this impeachment as one of those car chase videos, and the Dems are the chasee. We all know how it’s going to end, but they can’t voluntarily stop.

I think in the next week or so it will get to that point where the car slows down and we see the driver’s side door open, and there is an attempt to ditch the car and make a run for it. :)

I’m very much enjoying this impeachment thing. It doesn’t stand a chance in a post Dan Rather world.

What a useless bunch of Deep Staters...

I think they want Trump gone...they will not impeach him...

They will put on a show that they hope will cause Trump to lose the election in 2020..

That way they can say it was the election..

We better how the impeachment fails in the House

Do you really think they will bring a trial with hunter Biden and all the corruption in the Ukrain

They never said a word when they had the Senate when this was going on..

No hearing ever..no hearing now

I do not trust them one bit..

If Cornyn expects that impeachment will ultimately fail, and that view is held by the majority in the senate, why the neck not dismiss the charges immediately and not put the country through a sham impeachment?

There are things that the senate needs to follow through to the end, but a sham impeachment, totally biased and without a crime, is a completely foolish endeavor.

Cornyn and republicans and some not-so-crazy democrats, need to get some common sense into their heads.

The Senate must answer to history

History demands the constutionally required trial

There is one “yea” vote to convict, or Cornyn will find a convenient excuse to miss the vote all together, which is effectively the same as a “yea”.

The Constitution says that they have a Trial, so I wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand. It doesn’t say what that trial has to look like or be conducted. There’s only 2 precedents for that.

For what it’s worth, I think a trial could be more damaging to the Democrats if they do it right. (Odds of them doing it right ... ?)

The GOP Senate has done little but obstruction POTUS for 3 years. It’s a day dream to think an impeachment trial would be any different.

I think the longer this drags out in the Senate, the more Republicans look like a do nothing congress.

If no budget is passed in the house this year, it can be blamed on Pelosi/Schiff impeachment focus.

While I understand the logic that the house wont vote to impeach, consider the following statements:

To the Dems it is all about being in power
Their candidates suck this election cycle
They do not have a winning record to run on
All they have left is throwing mud at others
The leadership likely KNOWS that they are going to lose the House no matter what they do.

Given all that, I would say that they are desperate and desperate people do desperate thing. Likely they will try to salvage the base by pitching “We did all we could but were stopped by the evil Republicans in the Senate. Help us by electing our democrate senator candidates.”

If Cronyn is correct, the GOP will go the way of the Whigs. Trump has a 90% approval rate among Rep voters. If the GOP in Congress cannot stand united behind him, then it is time to form a new party under Trump to chart a new course. The disconnect between the political class and the people is why Trump was elected in the first place.

Me too. The main feature of that trial will be exposing the corruption before and after Trump’s election.

Wrong. Who can forget Specter’s Scottish law vote?

Feb 12, 1999 - How the senators voted on impeachment ... February 12) — The Senate acquitted President Bill Clinton Friday of both articles of impeachment. The perjury charge was defeated with 55 “not guilty” votes and 45 “guilty” votes.
