Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and a utility that provides gas to New York City and Long Island have been locked in a standoff since May, when New York regulators blocked the construction of a $1 billion natural gas pipeline that would have run from Pennsylvania to New Jersey and New York.
The utility, National Grid, says the pipeline is crucial to meeting the rising energy demand in the region and has imposed a moratorium, refusing to activate gas hookups for both new and returning customers.
On Tuesday, the fight took a sharp turn after Mr. Cuomo threatened to revoke National Grids license to operate in the southern part of New York.
Mr. Cuomo, in a letter, accused the utility of mishandling its gas supply system and recklessly disregarding its obligations as a public utility when it issued the moratorium.
The utilitys fundamental legal obligation was to plan and provide for future needs, the governor wrote. You failed by your own admission.
National Grid, which supplies gas to 1.8 million customers in New York City and on Long Island, said it would review Mr. Cuomos letter and respond accordingly.
We continue to work with all parties on these critical natural gas supply issues on behalf of all our customers in downstate New York, the utility said in a statement.
The moratorium has left some people in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island in flux. Developers have been unable to provide gas to new buildings, business owners cannot obtain requested upgrades and homeowners have had to fight to get suspended gas service restored.
At this point, a number of projects are in limbo because of uncertainty over the energy supply, said Kathryn S. Wylde, the president of the Partnership for New York City, an influential business group.

Yep. Straight out of Atlas Shrugged.
To be fair, that assumes facts not in evidence.
Would he be elected in an honest election?
“Socialist leaders should be locked up in a windowless cell.”
Memories - saw the original at the World's Fair in NYC back in '63.
My, how naïve we were....
[Funny how liberals hate energy,... until they discover they cant live without it.
Idiots.]
They should just say “see ya”..
You will see a rise in house fires as well. Since homes not wired for electric heat and used natural gas have smaller services then homes wired for electric heat. Plug in a few of those portable 1500w heaters and most circuits will be over capacity.
Cuomo is an idiot
Things are going to get more expensive up in the cold white north
Question is, will the suburban mom see that the electric bill doubled and the gas bill tripled because of democratic governor’s inability to expand and update the system? Or will they just blame the orange man cause he is bad?
Beyond the cost would be the question as to whether the existing electric transmission/distribution infrastructure would be able to handle a sudden increase in demand should customers have to resort to electric space heating as opposed to natural gas.
Hook up all the new lines he wants. The increased flow demand will drop the pressure."
Newer systems shut down completely when the pressure gets too low. You get a sub-artic cold front come through for a week, let's see how Cuomo defends the deaths that would occur with the elderly shut-ins around the city when their furnace shuts off.
May they have the coldest, longest winter in recorded history.
LIB losers are a barrel of laughs unless you live where they are in charge of ANYTHING. I don’t. I smile a lot.
That’s not anywhere near as visually exciting as watching hundreds of slum buildings with old systems suffer ‘kinetic disintegration’ on the evening news.
But, but wasn’t globull warming was supposed to eliminate NY winters?
The electric grid will handle that for now but what you’ll see is an increase in house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning deaths caused by idiots trying to stay warm, especially if the power goes out due to a storm. It’s going to be a rough winter. When they all get electric cars on top of this is when the grid fails.
Who is John Galt?
Listen you lousy capitalists, I don't give a rip if you go bankrupt providing gas without a pipeline. Either give us the gas or I'll bankrupt you! There!
Forbid methods of obtaining gas locally, then demand that others provide it. Typical RAT mentality.
It is always depressing to me when I see events in the current reality that seem like they were pulled, line for line, from Atlas Shrugged.
Say what you will about Ayn Rand, she pegged leftists.
