They are an enormous cause of emissions, and deadly to pedestrians? Is it time for automakers to stop selling them or cities to stop allowing them on their streets?
Over the last decade, global SUV ownership has doubled. In that time, the vehicles contributed more to the increase in global CO2 emissions than airlines, trucks, or heavy industry, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency. Even if we add nearly 150 million electric cars to the road by 2040, if SUV ownership grows at its current rate, theyll offset that entire emissions reduction. And while theyre spewing emissions, they also have a more tangible cost: Theyre more likely than smaller cars to kill pedestrians, contributing to a steep rise in pedestrian deaths.
Now some environmental nonprofits argue that automakers shouldnt be making the vehicles at all, and some politicians are beginning to argue that they should be bannedif not from everywhere, then at least from city streets. In September, when a 3-year-old, his grandmother, and two men in their twenties were killed by an SUV in Berlin (coincidentally, on the same day that the German newspaper Handelsblatt ran a feature article about the growth in SUVs with the headline SUV insanity), hundreds of people protested the next day. The next weekend, thousands of people protested at the Frankfurt Auto Show to denounce the climate damage from the SUVs that automakers were promoting at the show ...

One article I was reading in it was about how a gay owned company was helping gays adopt... Really, that is about business?
+1
“Should we outlaw SUVs?” is a question only asked by socialists and communists.
It is undeserving of an answer.
However...
The newest 2019 Porsche Macan GTS is small & low enough to offer SUV utility and classic Porsche handling/power...and look darn good while doing it.
I’ve owned SUVs since 1975 and just got a new Subaru Ascent. Raising nine children, there was no alternative, except more vehicles. Some may fault us for having nine children, but it’s no business of theirs. Nowadays, I need one to transport my grandchildren.
Anyone who wants to tell me how to live can go eat some Solent Green.
Exactly what I thought.
Until China and India step up and stop getting a pass on emissions all of this nonsense is irrelevant. On top of this, in the west, either emission standards are being met or they’re not. All these vehicles are far more efficient than in the past.
This is just virtue signalling alarmism.
because everyone wants an SUV ?
What is this “we” shit, Kemosabe?
They did but now they call them SUV’s they just got roomier.
We should get rid of CAFE standards and let people buy cars they want.
Those Paul Shanklin songs on Rush were funny. I wish Rush would still do it...
I was 61 back in my salad days. Now Im 6 even at 70. With a bad lower back and bad feet getting into and out of my truck is about the only vehicle that doesnt cause me pain. The new SUVs all look like bloated ticks. I hate the designs. More like the mini vans you speak of. Perhaps when the new broncos come out Ill like them enough to sell the truck which is much more vehicle than I need.
As a kid my dad had a 51 Plymouth. You didnt have to squat to get into that. I miss those era cars. They were for civilized people
Who knows.
Why do they call semi automatic rifles assault weapons?
Probably because they went to Journalism School or they were English majors. Engineering, computer science, IT and business administration was too hard. Too much math.
Fox News probably copied the article right out of Road & Track or some other automobile publication.
The other thing I remember about seeing that line of ISIS dudes all driving their Toyota’s was thinking:
Where is a Marine Pilot and his AT Warthog when you need one. They were easy picking. One pilot could have destroyed the entire column in about 2 minutes.
Unfortunately, we have too many idiot pedestrians nowadays who jaywalk and have their nose stuck in their dumbphones to notice traffic.
They will never learn. SUV’s were invented because the “outlawed” (with full standards) the station wagon. So the station wagon was put on a truck bed and wala - the now legal SUV.
Americans will always find a way around government . . .
Some people are so stupid, I can see me now pulling a 20’ trailer with a VW Beetle instead of my Chevy Tahoe.
What a lunatic.
“we” as in the USA can’t ban something as effective as SUVs.
SUVs in most of the USA make a lot of sense - the USA is huge, has a lot of places off the road etc.
An SUV in downtown New York is a potential hazard to other drivers and will pollute more and use more gas. On the other hand, a small electric SMART car can function in downtown NYC but is useless for the rest of the country.
In the case of dense cities with highly efficient public transport, I am in favor of more pedestrian and cycle and public transport areas - let cars park outside central London and people use the tube or buses or taxis or just walk.
Ditto for Manhattan and presumably for Berlin.
But outside those cities, an SUV makes sense.
An SUV these days is simply a car with a higher roof over the trunk.
Now a BIG SUV is merely a pickup with a glass roof over the bed.
