Iran holds surprise military drills near Turkish border

Iran’s army has launched unannounced military drills in the northwest of the country bordering Turkey, Iranian state media reported.

The semiofficial ISNA news agency reported on October 9 that the exercises included rapid reaction units, mobile and offense brigades, and helicopters.

The maneuvers in Iran’s Western Azerbaijan Province are being overseen by Iran’s army chief, Major General Abdolrahim Musavi, according to state TV.

The reports did not mention the number of troops taking part.

The announcement of the drills comes as Turkey says it is about to launch an offensive into northern Syria.

Tehran, a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s civil war, opposes the planned Turkish incursion.

On October 9, Iranian President Hassan Rohani called on Ankara to show restraint and avoid military action in northern Syria.

“Turkey is rightfully worried about its southern borders. We believe that a correct path should be adopted to remove those concerns,” the state-run IRNA news agency quoted Rohani as saying.

He also said that U.S. troops “must leave the region” and Kurdish forces in Syria “should support the Syrian Army.”

I’m okay with the Iranian Army solving the problem with ISIS terrorists who are on the loose.

Would be nice to see Turkey and Iran at each others throats.

Our troops safely out of harms way. Trump’s strategy playing out?

I see he is putting troops in SA. Makes me go Hmmmmm. What is he up to?

Another reason to avoid foreign entanglements. Alliances shift all the time
U.S. really can’t support either side.

Until Turkey engages with Iran...then NATO must come to their aid.

Again, be careful what you wish for. This is NATO business, and NATO has to defend Turkey, not the USA alone. DJT will have to start turning the screws.

The Kurds will being avenged by Iran, now that would be something.

Undoubtedly part of the strategy.

Turkey is threatening Europe with the threat of sending 4+ million refugees their way.

Very complex dynamic.

Is part of it to expel Turkey from NATO?
Is it a multifront invasion and decapitation of Iran?
Is it ?????????????

Many many possible end games.

NATO is required to come to the aid of an attacked member. But not if they pick the fight. It’s not a suicide pact.

Trump: 'Ok, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, France, time to man up! According to my records you owe NATO enough back dues to allow you to help our fellow-NATO Turkish bros, so you take care of this crisis. Get back to me when it's all resolved.'

No it’s not a suicide pact, but since when does reason play in this world of propaganda.

How does that work? I ask in all seriousness. If a NATO ally is attacked, when do the other members defend? If there a vote or something? What’s the process? I couldn’t find much out doing a quick search.

I agree that the interests of the US are not served by getting into the middle of a shooting war between Iran/Syria, the Kurds and Turkey, and I agree it was a good move for the President to withdraw our troops. But, if Iran and Turkey start shooting at each other, does the US and other NATO countries get drawn in to support Turkey, a NATO ally?

Heh... We might mediate a agreement between the Turks and Kurds to fight on the same side. The combined forces would be known as the

Turd Force.

I crack myself up sometimes.

If turkey attacks Iran, NATO is not obligated to come to their aid. It’s doubtful we need to come to their aid if Iran attacks them in the wake of them invading an Iranian Ally.

Furthermore, we’re not required to get involved in any war that a NATO member does. Article 5 only requires us to take whatever measures we deem necessary. That can simply diplomacy if we feel like it

Turkey is a dubious ally at best. Erdogan is a nutjob.

Turkey invaded a nation. Syria. If a Syrian Ally shoots back at Turkey, there is no NATO response.
Article 5 does not require us to do anything to assist a NATO member who decides to launch a war.

Furthermore, Article 5 does not require us to use military force. It simply requires us to take whatever measures we deem necessary. That can be anything from a strongly-worded letter on up.
