Vermont City Councilor Considers Disarming The Town's Police Force posted by Bill Galluccio - Aug 27, 2019

If one city councilor in Burlington, Vermont has her way, the police in the town might have to give up their guns. Perri Freeman brought up the idea during a recent city council meeting and says that she hopes to spur a conversation about the expectations and training of police officers in the community.

Freeman, who is a progressive Democrat, pointed out that other countries do not have armed police forces.

"Realizing that there are actually several countries where they're not using firearms for their regular police duties. Just to name a few: the U.K., Ireland, Iceland," Freeman told WCAX. "I started thinking critically about what is the next step in terms of policing practices, whether that's having more sophisticated training for officers, having a different expectation."

The head of Burlington's police officers union blasted her idea because it ignores the fact that many Americans legally own guns. He explained that disarming the police would make them vulnerable, especially in potentially dangerous situations.

"There are a lot of guns around, and we as the police, try to put ourselves in the position of advantage all the time, and to show up to an armed incident unarmed? I can't think of anything more disadvantaged than that," said Dan Gilligan, President of the Burlington Police Officer's Association.

Her plan is unlikely to be enacted as she does not appear to have support from the mayor or other members of the council.

"I think it's really quite unrealistic to think they can do their job effectively and be safe themselves and keep the public safe if they were to be disarmed," Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger said. "My sense is this is an idea that is really out of touch with the reality that the men and women of the Burlington Police Department face as they work every day to keep the city safe."

While Freeman admits there might be situations where officers need to be armed, she hopes her suggestion will lead to discussions about policing tactics.

"It's not an overnight thing. It's a gradual program. It's talking about how do we really shift and talk about doing things maybe differently in a way that might be better in the long run," she said.

Vermont has a low crime rate because of it’s lack of diversity.

That’s the problem with leftists. They start talking a stream of so much unadulterated BS, any sane person’s brain locks up trying to formulate a response.

I don’t particularly have any “love” for the Cops, as a species, necessarily. I mean, most people’s only interaction consists chiefly of sending them money, in the form of a citation. I have foiled their dastardly plans! Muhuhuhahah!! I drive sensibly, use turn signals, (usually) stop at stop signs, and keep my plates and registration current. You’ll never get me Copper!

Has she thought about a “training program” for the public? There’s yer problem.

Time to hold them to the fire

I regard that idea as a high-risk proposition. Leftists cannot be shamed into being logically consistent and it does not matter anyway.

Leftists want us disarmed. They will promise anything that might get us to disarm voluntarily. They don't need to deliver on those promises and they won't. They will never give up their own armed minions. They need them to enslave and kill their opponents.

Native Vermonters may be ‘fed up’ but they have already given up their state to LLBean trust fund babies. Leakey Leahy has been their senator. Didn’t he defeat McMullen by 50 points ?

just think about WHERE MS 13 types would gravitate to if they could?

Last time I was up there in Burlington and upper New York State I saw A LOT of muslims. If there were MS13 types there, I don't know. They weren't wearing head scarfs.

If Freeman is thinking about Great Britain...think again. I saw more military weapons carried by their police at Victoria Station, the airports, and on the streets than I’ve ever seen on any American street.

This really isn't as crazy as it sounds. Like most things it depends on the execution. British beat patrol police are not armed.

The truth is that the police are too armed and are in many places are beginning to to resemble combat units. When the populace sees the cops as an occupying force you've go problems.

I read an article/column yesterday about the “native” Vermonters are apparently fed up with the RINOs and progressive Dems who are running the state into financial ruin.

The descendants of the Green Mountain Boys keep arms and tend to be conservative. Most live in the hills. The University of Vermont is a cesspool that has attracted too many liberals from downstate New York. The Burlington swamp is huge.

Darn right it is high risk, and that is the point. As soon as the concept that law enforcement will not be exempt and have to do their job without being armed is brought up this will all end. Law enforcement will not have it, and the people, not even the left will have it.

The risk will be all on them if they continue to push it after this, all in or fold. If we insist this will be the only acceptable option they will fold immediately and this will all stop.

It’s time to make it clear that we will not accept an armed police state over an unarmed populace, and that if they take any then they take them all. And anyone who believes an armed police state will not at some point be used against an unarmed populace is just plain stupid.
