Boris Johnson dramatically pulled out of a press conference in Luxembourg today after protests and an extraordinary spat with counterpart Xavier Bettel.
Protesters carrying messages including 'Bog Off Boris' first jeered the PM after showdown talks with EU commission president Jean-Claude Juncker over lunch at a restaurant.
And Mr Johnson then faced cat-calls from a crowd including British ex-pats as he arrived for a meeting with Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Bettel.
The stormy atmosphere led to Mr Johnson requesting the press call be held outside following their private discussions. It was originally planned to be held just yards from the demonstrations.
But in an extraordinary insult, Mr Bettel - whose country has a population of just 600,000 people - refused the request and decided to continue without Mr Johnson, leaving an empty podium beside him.
'Time is ticking,' he said. 'We need more than just words,'

One of which was my Uncle John, who was killed in action in January of 1944.
His death obviously affected my dad greatly, and I was named after my Uncle John in 1952.
“We spilled billions of gallons of blood for these pigs!”
Europe wasn’t worth a single drop. If the men of 1917 and 1941 could see what would become of Europe, they’d have hung Wilson and Roosevelt. Truman too.
Imagine building a time machine and going back to show the men preparing for landings at Omaha Beach what the world they “won” would look like. I bet they’d have laid down their rifles.
Ugh.. THAT SOUNDS SO LIBERAL
“Pivoting” back to a proud heritage is precisely the opposite to what is defined as “liberalism,” today; though it need not conflict with classical liberalism.
what the hell are you talking about?
Twelve years ago I was with a group tour in Luxembourg. It’s a very nice little country, and is quite prosperous.
Our tour was at the beautiful castle on the Luxembourg-German border at Vianden. I decided to not walk up the hill to the castle as I had been there previously. While I was standing at the base of the hill, an elderly man came up to me and said, “Thank you.” I was startled, and he realized it so he repeated himself, “Thank you.” Then he said to me “Without the USA, we would now be speaking Russian.”
Luxembourg is a very pretty little country with rolling hills and the Ardennes mountains in the north. Across the north is a highway from Bastogne, Belgium to the German border just south of Aachen. Numerous small museums are all along that highway in many small towns - museums to the WWII experience and the USA’s 3rd Army which liberated them, not once, bur twice. We were told a story that in Luxembourg no one dares to ever make a disparaging remark about General George Patton. He is their hero. Or, at least he once was their hero.
Sadly, like in the USA, many of the younger generation in Luxembourg are forgetting the experiences of WWII.
I am writing in response to your #25.
Being insulted by Luxembourg is a bit like being called a poo poo head by a 4 year old. Amusing and adorable.
If Luxembourg were dissolved into Belgium would anyone even notice?
Err.. remember that it was the UK that negotiated a deal without checking with its parliament first, and it was the UK that has twice asked for an extension.
And that it has been 55 days of boris in office but he hasn’t provided any proposed new deal to the other 27 despite claiming to have done so.
This nightmare is of the UK making
Why would the secom licences be affected?
Because 48% or more think the cross cultural confederation makes sense
Hmm.. the English and the Luxembourgers are both Germanic peoples.
I don’t think so, even in France and Belgium, the young are taught how the USA saved them from Nazis Germany.
They may disagree with later governments but they fully respect the blood split 70 years ago
I think you’re trying to be eloquent, but you’re just incomprehensible. A string of non-sequitur (at least 4) in one sentence does not convey some profound meaning.
Are you trying to say that joining the EU (’historic coming together’) was a good move? or it was just ‘historic’?
And that exiting the EU to go back to a ‘proud heritage’ is somehow bad?
And what generational struggle are you referring to? The decades-long effort to promote the liberal agenda?
Why is it a ‘nightmare’ and ‘losing their way’ to want to leave the EU?
Joining the EU was a disaster for them.
The British Union needs to complete Brexit as soon as possible, if the culture of the four nations is to survive in a recognizable form. (See Letter To European Conservatives)
Hilarious!
