Crude prices surged Sunday evening following an attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure and announcement from President Trump that he has authorized the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

U.S. oil futures advanced about 12% to $61.60 a barrel shortly after trading opened at 6 p.m. ET. Brent crude, the global gauge of oil prices, soared 13% to nearly $69 a barrel. If those moves held, they would mark some of the biggest intraday for crude in years.

Hatred of the Saudis and a desire to make their own oil more valuable...Iran's two motives.

These “crash” hedges are so “outsized” simply due to the massive scale of “50 Cent” Aug VIX Call Wing positions which Dealers are short—and thus they have been forced to get long a lot of S&P Vega via VIX futs, S&P downside or just “shorts” in Spooz to offset this exposure

I've been saying for years we ought to do targeted strikes on Iran's refineries.

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-08-21/here-short-gamma-reason-behind-todays-market-

The catalyst behind said hedge unwind is the previously noted recent re-emergence of the infamous “50-cent” VIX trader, who forced dealers to take opposing positions to his/her Call Wing positions, which due to positive gamma and dealer vega balancing, were forced to keep buying stocks the higher the market rose, and the lower VIX dropped, to wit:meltup

These are oil futures prices. They are based on what traders think the oil supply and demand will be in a few months. They may be right, or they may turn out to be wrong.

Unlikely. They deliberately hobble their military. Because a military commander capable of striking Iran is capable of striking the royal palace and making himself king. The entire military is geared almost exclusively towards defense and internal security.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14_July_Revolution

The problem with a strong military is the same as the problem encountered by the Roman Emperors who became puppets of their Praetorian Guards. For the Gulf nations, Ministry of Defense isn’t a politically-correct term for their military establishments. What we have is a War Department, as in we are geared for offensive war. Their militaries are really only capable of defense and riot control.

In a way, they buy a lot of our gear so we have pre-cached spare parts and supplies if the balloon goes up. In a book about Desert Shield right after Saddam overran Kuwait, that’s exactly what the tripwire force of 82nd and 101st Airborne paratroopers that landed to discourage Saddam from overrunning the Saudis ended up doing - using American spare parts and supplies the Saudis had purchased from Uncle Sam. That’s what all the Saudi bashers don’t realize - 9/11 wasn’t the doing of the royals - they are reliant on us for external defense, and have no reason to !@#$ us over.

I think most people think Muslims are drones who do as they’re told. In reality, Muslims are dangerous subjects prone to armed revolt, whether or not their rulers are Muslim. But, in a way, especially if their rulers are Muslim. Much as Alexander’s generals slaughtered his entire family after he died, Muhammad’s generals wiped out his bloodline after he croaked. Except Muslims consider Muhammad the closest thing to Allah that ever walked the Earth, whereas Alexander’s men merely considered him a brilliant and ruthless commander. If the literal fruit of Muhammad’s loins weren’t sacred, no Muslim ruler is, and this is reflected in the frequency of palace revolts. And at root, that’s why the Gulf kingdoms have fairly weak military establishments. Because unlike their current Western counterparts, Muslim generals (and Muslims overall) have the mentality of the men of Alexander’s age - they view a coup, however bloody, as a completely legitimate means of gaining power.

Why should Trump strike Iran? Isn’t it time for Saudi to start using the war toys they purchased from us? They’re big boys now and can take care of themselves. Why don’t they fly some airliners into Kharg Island as they did in 9/11 to us? See how the Iranians like it?

How is this winning?

Maybe people should stop throwing that phrase around like they say “god bless you” so it still means something when it’s said.

Because it’s been used in some absurd and nonsensical ways too often lately :)

I was THRILLED to see the Sauds get hit.

Especially so close to 9/11

Sad that there weren’t massive deaths though.

“Follow the money. Who wins with increased oil prices?”

Deep State.

Because higher Gas prices hurt Trump in the long run. Plus they have tried just about everything to start a war between the US and Iran.

I can looked stone faced at death, particularly if it’s bad guys.

I can get choked up if it’s innocents or Americans.

I am never THRILLED by it.
