Greetings to all at the Canteen!

To all our military men and women, past and present,

I'd had trouble going to sleep that morning because I had an unsettling feeling that something was wrong. No clue what it was but the feeling was storng. I'd only been asleep about an hour when Hubby woke me up, very upset. The only word that sank in was "war" and I thought the cats were in a huge fight that he couldn't break up.

I stormed out, yelling at the cats, and they were sitting around staring at me like I was crazy. Then Hubby said, "No. I said I think we're at war," as he pointed to the TV.

I was stunned to see the Twin Towers burning. Then came word that the Pentagon was hit. Then word that another hijacked airliner appeared to be heading towards DC, though it didn't make it that far.

It was another 48 hours before I finally slept. I sat in front of the TV, heart-broken by the images we were all seeing on our screens and terrified another shoe was going to drop at any moment.

There are people who seem to have forgotten that day.
I will NEVER forget.

I was walking into work at the fire station and one of the fire investigators was walking out. He said, "Did you hear? Someone just flew a plane into the World Trade Center." I thought he was joking. He said, "I'm totally serious."

When I came into the office, everyone was in the conference room watching it on the TV. I walked in just in time to see the second plane smash into the building. Most of us watching were firefighters or ex-firefighters. Nobody said much, but I know they were all thinking the same as me. I want to help. Send me. Pack up my turnouts and send me.

My wife woke me up (I worked nights) and told me about the first tower being hit. I got up and watched the rest of the whole bloody mess live. Watched the towers fall, watched the Pentagon burn. Watched firefighters emerging from a cloud of debris, looking like lost children, their command and control utterly smashed. Later that night, lying in bed my wife said “please tell me it’s going to be alright”. I looked at her and said “I can’t.”

I was asleep...my brother in Texas called.

“Turn the TV on”.

What channel?

“Doesn’t matter”.

Took a little TV to work and stayed glued to it, and FR, all day as I worked.

Having the planes all grounded was a huge thing here. More than half the state has no roads.

Should have nuked Mecca that same day.

We should have nuked the entire Middle East. And taken EVERY GDAMN THING THEY OWN.

Yet, here we are again worried about 3rd world countries getting nukes. We never learn.

I was waking up to the radio on the west coast.

The first radio report didn’t specify what kind or size of an airplane hit a building in NYC.

I knew of a crash in the 1940s when a B-25 plowed into the Empire State Building, so I thought it might turn out to be something like that.

And then when a second plane hit another building we all instinctively knew what this was.

I would imagine that the rail execs were afraid that they’d be next in the assaults!

I was in the SF area about a week later and I’ve never seen them so patriotic. Never have been since then.

I was at work, insurance agency. The only office I’ve ever worked in, that had actual live TV. One of the gals’ husband worked at Stategic Air Command, and she was getting vague reports from him about AF planes trailing the 4th plane, and might shoot it down. But it went down in PA. Our office closed a little after noon, and everyone went home. I waited at home, for my daughter to be walking home from middle school with her neighborhood friends. My son was in high school. He said all of the teachers, except in his German class, let them watch TV all day.

While waiting to walk down the street and meet the middle schoolers, I heard a plane going over, and was absolutely terrified, until I figured out it was Air Force One, going to land at SAC/Offutt AF base.

There was supposed to be a program at the middle school that night, which was postponed for a day or two. When they had the program, there were many prayers included, and everyone in the gym joined to sing “God Bless the USA”. Many of us wept.

I had recently been on a job hunt, for which I had been told that, if hired (and I was very hopeful), there would be training for two weeks in NYC. It was Marsh & McClennan (sp?). I was never so happy to not have been hired for a job that I really wanted.

I was in a hotel bar in India after a business meeting. CNN was on the tv with first tower smoking. We watched as the second plane hit. Several visitors could not return home for a week.

I was on a bus heading to downtown New York. Heard a radio report and saw the smoke in New York. The bus driver could hardly drive the bus. I worked 2 blocks away from the WTC. Was going in late as I saw the Giants get beat by the Broncos the night before and decided to take the last bus in. People I work with did some heroic deeds. A woman I worked with handed out wet towels so people could breathe as they were leaving the building. They could not leave until the 1st building collapsed. The air was all smoke and dust. There were so many heroes that day that their deeds is just another story. I regret that I was not there to help.

I was on my way to work listening to the news on the car radio. The electronic highway signs all said the international airport was closed - national emergency. When I got to work, I started calling family members to make sure two family members who are pilots, one for American and one for United, were okay (they were). Everyone at the office spent the day monitoring the news. An awful day.

Wow, it be interesting to hear more of your experiences from that day.

I remember at time later in the day and knowing that all air traffic had halted.
Living in Ames Iowa I was looking to the south and noticed a contrail heading east.
I knew it had to be Air Force One, as everything else had been grounded. I believe it was known the President had headed to Offut for awhile after leaving Florida and he was heading back to DC.
I was glad to see that as we would start the process of going after the people who had done he attacks.

I was Very Big with Child, and having a quiet morning with our toddler daughter. My husband called to tell me I should not drive near downtown LA. Wasn’t planning on it, I said. Why? He tried to tell me that the twin towers fell down and I just couldn’t picture how they could fall without hitting other buildings. “You mean they imploded?” I said. I got off the phone and went to the computer, not the tv, so I could keep my daughter from seeing it. Every news outlet seemed to be swamped. Then I remembered an independent news source I found out about in pro life political work: NewsMax. That worked. Up came a picture with scrolling updates.

Our baby was born a week later. I vowed to raise him to be a good, brave American man like the ones on flight 93. He’ll be 18 next week.
