Department of Energy Rolls Back Obama-Era Lightbulb Rules

In a clear victory for consumer choice, the Trump administration's Department of Energy rolled back Obama-era rules that mandated the use of LED light bulbs.

The Hill:

DOE argued its rule will have little impact given the increasing demand for LED bulbs, which use less electricity than many other types.

“This rule does not prevent consumers from buying the lamps they desire, including efficient options,” the agency wrote in the rule. “The market is successfully transitioning to LEDs regardless of government regulation. Consumers are clearly taking advantage of the energy savings provided by LEDs.”

A senior DOE official told reporters that “concerns may be overstated” and the new rule would not have a large impact on the market.

“This regulation gives consumers more choices, and consumers are better off with more choices,” he said.

I don’t see myself buying incandescents again. I’m slowing replacing the last of my CFLs with LEDs. Some early LEDs (candelabra base) are getting replaced with new ones that look like they have filaments.

I recently tried LED light bulbs for the first time and I’m impressed.

I personally prefer the new light bulb technology to the old. But I DEFINITELY prefer free markets to regulated markets.

So glad Obama is gone.

Yep. Whole house except two antique lamps my wife has. 10w each so for decoration not lighting.

Even replace 4 footers with LEDs!

I stockpiled 100 watt bulbs, so the new rules won’t change my buying habits, since I won’t need any for at least five years. I really do read better and concentrate better with them. I think it’s both the brightness and the warmth that are factors.

Wait until you start replacing them more often. My house was built in 1984 and these LED bulbs last about 4-6 months. The CFL bulbs were less than that. I have all copper wiring but I don’t know if its the fixture or what but they just don’t last.

We hate LED bulbs and are delighted to see these regulations bite the dust.

For certain applications (vanity mirror bulbs, some can lights, some flood lamps) it is not easy to find an LED that has both the right shape and brightness. The fluorescent lights that were being pushed a few years earlier can wreak havoc with some epileptics and others who are prone to seizures.

Does this mean Elaine will be able to use the E-Z Bake Oven again?

You know that batter is like 30 years old.

To be honest, we have changed most of ours too. Brighter and less ladder climbing. :-)

Me too I was hesitant because 1 bulb costed me like 11 bucks when the old ones for a pack of 4 costed like 2.89. I will admit the LED ones are much brighter and last way longer. Now I’m an LED convert.

About time but appreciated. My stash of incandescents is still hanging in there but my 60W supply is running low.

I never purchased LED's since they look like crap in whatever fixture you place them in.

The government had no business telling me what kind of bulbs to purchase and that goes with the low volume toilets too.........

I stocked up also.
I use a 100W bulb to heat my pump house in very low temps.
Down to my last two, so that’s a worry gone.
Same with the 75W that I like best in living room lamps, not many of them left.
Still have plenty of 40 and 60.
