A man with citizenship in Lebanon and the United States was arrested this morning after arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on charges of transporting visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
According to court documents, George Aref Nader, 60, was charged by criminal complaint after he arrived at Washington-Dulles International Airport on Jan. 17, 2018 from Dubai in possession of a cell phone containing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The charges were unsealed after his arrest this morning.
Nader previously pleaded guilty in the Eastern District of Virginia to the same charge in 1991.
If convicted, Nader faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 40 years.
Nader was a witness in the Special Counsel's probe into Russian intereference in the 2016 election, and has ties to members of the Trump transition team.

Nader is a Lebanese-American who worked for the United Arab Emirates royal family at the time. Kirill Dmitriev ran Russia's sovereign wealth fund and had a Putin-approved plan for reconciliation between the US and Russia. Mueller refers to the two as "close business associate[s]".
According to Mueller, "Nader developed contacts with both US presidential campaigns during the 2016 election". So, Nader was as much of a Hillary partisan as he was a Trump partisan: in other words, he was a sleazy hack lobbyist with feet in both camps.
According to Mueller, "Nader did not ultimately introduce Dmitriev to anyone associated with the incoming Administration".
Nader was successful in conning Eric Prince to meet with Dmitriev in the Seychelles during the transition period. Eric Prince was a Trump supporter but "did not have a formal role in the [Trump] Campaign". However, Nader also successfully conned Demitriev to meet, saying that such a meeting was suggested during a meeting "'with some key people within the family and inner circle'. According to Mueller, that was "a reference to Prince", not the Trump transition team. Nothing was accomplished during the Seychelles meeting other than the embarrassment of Prince when word leaked out.

TSA rarely does anything with devices unless they suspect it is somehow a phony device and could be bomb or something like that.
Customs (CBP) would be the agency searching phones or devices when crossing a border or entering the country through an airport.
