Here’s a fun fact. Megyn Kelly was fired from The TODAY Show after she suggested that going in blackface for Halloween wasn’t such a big deal when she was a kid, and she walked away from that controversy with her entire $69 million contract intact. Not bad.
Gov. Ralph Northam says he’s not taking the easy way out and resigning after photos of students in blackface and a Klan costume appeared on his personal yearbook page, and he too seems to be suggesting that, way back in 1984 in Virginia, practically every white person was doing blackface.
It might have been commonplace at East Virginia Medical School:
But others disagree with the idea it was “commonplace” when and where Northam grew up. Keep in mind, dude’s only 59.

I don’t remember it from the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. It wouldn’t have been a big deal for anybody in any case.
Even in segregated Texas in the 1950s, blackface was not common. This guy is grasping at straws. Glub glub.
Where I grew up in Michigan in the 1950s and 1960s I never heard of such things as this.
However, much earlier, Al Jolson (of course)was joined by many others including Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby as 2 examples who routinely performed in blackface and in minstrel shows when young.
I am a semi-expert on Al Jolson and he was never ,ever a white racist. He befriended and sincerely supported rights for blacks and in his later films performed alongside actual black people (not cork blackened actors around him).
He was pilloried for his pro-black stances with studios and producers.
Democrats know that abject fools vote Democrat.

I really don’t think the black face thing is a big deal. I don’t care, but we know how the left would go bat guano crazy if a republican did it. What he should be getting flamed to hell for is that awful abortion law that he signed. Bastard. Anybody who voted for it should have their children taken away from them.
I found out today from my elderly father that he played a blackface little Black Sambo in a 2nd grade play. Would have been around 1935 in Louisiana.

In the mid 1980’s you made fraternity pledges go to things in blackface because it was considered very much wrong and in poor taste. That was in the South when the Georgia flag was still pretty much the Confederate Battle Flag. If someone did it, they were made to, or they were being ironic.

I’m not for people’s lives getting ruined for a stupid joke in their youth. It’s absolute totalitarianism and anathema to free speech. However, there is a certain schadenfreude to a Democrat getting hoisted on his own petard.
