In the supplement world, vitamin D is a bit like a Kardashian. Its fame seemed to come out of nowhere about a decade ago, garnering so much press so fast that its hard to remember a time when people werent talking about it.
Vitamin D had long been known for protecting bones, but its star began to rise in the early 2000s after researchers made connections hinting that vitamin D was good for a lot more than our skeletons. It appeared to help protect against a lengthy list of ailments, including multiple sclerosis, asthma, depression, heart disease and cancer. The vitamin also was said to improve athletic performance.
Organizations like the Vitamin D Council the 2003 brainchild of a psychiatrist who became a vitamin D enthusiast began to actively promote the benefits to the public and to physicians, while selling test kits for vitamin D blood levels. Doctors checked for it; patients demanded testing. Researchers latched on.
But with more research comes more scrutiny, and most recently, a series of seemingly tarnishing findings. On November 10, the New England Journal of Medicine published the largest study so far to test vitamin D supplements protection against cancer and heart disease. The results were generally interpreted as inconclusive at best and disappointing at worst. One 2017 review of the evidence for cardiovascular benefits concluded that studies of people taking vitamin D have failed to show clear improvements in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity or lipid parameters.
Even the vitamins reputation for helping bones took a hit last April from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

How much vitamin d do you take each day?
10,000 IU, 5,000 lunch and 5,000 dinner. I also take 100mcg of vitamin K2.
The VA had me taking 50,000 IU a day at one time.

I heard about taking supplemental vitamin D several years back on the “This week in Tech - Security Now” podcast, of all things. It’s cheap, natural, so I figured what the heck. I went from getting 3 or 4 colds per year to zero colds per year. I take a single 5,000 IU D-3 capsule each day along with other vitamin supplements.
I’ve read you need vitamin A to fully utilize vitamin D. That means taking caretenoids the body can store.
You need to take Vitamin K2 with it. K2 puts calcium into bones where it belongs.
Yes, very important! There are two kinds of K2. I believe the one to take is the K2-MK7 one (as opposed to the K2-MK4 one)....
I agree. I didn’t read through all the doses in each study there, but I suspect in general they are too skimpy. I read Dr. Mercola’s website a lot and he recommends getting one’s level up to 60-70 for general health, which for me takes about 7500 U a day of D3.

Yes, and in order for the D3 to work well, it uses up a bit of the body’s magnesium. Forget where I read that...either Mercola or Sardi, both good info sources....

Yep. Vitamin K2-MK7 puts the calcium where it belongs with the added benefit of taking it out of places like your arteries where it doesnt belong. Another side benefit is that it reduces plaque build up on your teeth.

In the 60s it was vitamin C then the 70s was vitamin A. In the 80s it was vitamin E. Vitmin Bs were the rage after that for the heart and pregnant women as well as hangovers. Now its vitamin D. Who knows what is next?
I take it for the strengthening of bones property.If it does that at all, I’m happy.
I had no idea that there is people who think that taking D should turn your bones into Titanium.
Men with lower levels of Vitamin D are more likely to get prostate cancer. It has also been shown to slow the progress of metastatic prostate cancer; at least it has for me, along with some other supplements.
I take about 20,000 iu of Vitamin D every day. Metformin, 1,000/day, also helps for prostate cancer.
There is great evidence that Vitamin D is at least an indicator of something good, but it looks like it is really sunlight we need.
I never know quite how much of it to take with my 5K vit D3. I think Mercola says take 100 mcg per 1000 D3, but I just take 2 of the 90 mcg K2-MK7 along with 4000 D3.
Interesting sidenote: Serrapeptase is used to remove plaque from the arteries, and is prescribed for patients by cardiaologists in Japan. Serrapeptase is the enzyme found in the stomachs of the silkworm, which comes into play when it sheds its shell. Very interesting stuff.
