Hmm: Can't House Republicans Just Pass Trump's $5 Billion Wall Funding Request?
Townhall ^ | Dec 12, 2018 2:30 PM | Guy Bension

The answer to the question posed in my headline is 'yes' -- theoretically. The GOP still controls the House of Representatives for the next few weeks, so if (still) Speaker Ryan and company can get their caucus in line, they could simply pass a DHS appropriation that meets the president's full request on wall funding. That would not only fortify Trump's bargaining position and apply pressure to Senate Democrats, it would also embarrass incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who just taunted her Republican colleagues for not having the votes. And the next House Republican leader is telling reporters that he's "100 percent" confident that he does have the votes:

Felicia Sonmez ✔ @feliciasonmez McCarthy tells Fox News tonight that he has the votes for a House bill with $5 billion in wall funding. Q: Are you 100% confident? McCarthy: "Yes, I am."

Paul Kane ✔ @pkcapitol For what it's worth, it's very doubtful that Ryan/McCarthy have 218 votes on their side a gov't funding bill, even one including $5b for the wall. Some conservatives will balk at other spending, moderates will oppose the wall & some midterm losers might not show to vote.

All sorts of journalists who cover Capitol Hill are expressing skepticism over this claim, citing several factors: First, absenteeism. Dozens of lawmakers, including many defeated GOP incumbents, haven't been showing up for work lately. What are the chances leadership can wrangle them back to DC to participate in strategic show votes? Second, resentment. Many of those defeated Republicans, some of whom the president foolishly ridiculed, at least partially blame Trump for their losses...

No, a bill has to pass both houses of Congress and be signed into law by POTUS, or else the legislative process starts all over in the new Congress.

House Republicans could pass a bill funding the Wall.

But they don’t want to, so they won’t.

The only way the wall gets built is if it happens during his Presidency which may be only two more years — six more if we are lucky. If a dem President follows him they won’t follow through and finish the wall.

So it probably has to be a blitz effort by the military to make it happen. That covers labor but he would still need monies for materials. I don’t see how it gets done. Certainly Trump doesn’t have the votes in Congress for a wall. Hardly anyone except Trump is saying anything about a wall.

I say the house should pass it. Then we’ll see what the senate does and how everyone stands.

That’s why we need much more than just a wall, we need a wall PLUS a major deterrent for being or getting here illegally, with or without the wall, and one that ‘the next’ GOP president can quickly restore, such as -

Mass deportations
Severe penalties for hiring illegal aliens
Denial of benefits

In other words, for those illegally crossing the border, with or without the wall, THEY are the ones who need to be worrying about what ‘the next’ GOP president will do, and then, hopefully, conclude ‘why bother’.

A Modest Proposal to ENSURE passage: Trump has his staff inform ALL retiring GOP members that they will be BLACKLISTED from lobbying the Trump Administration — all branches — for the duration of his presidency (2 - 6 years) if they don’t vote to fund The Wall. That would make them all but unemployable by K Street corporate leeches, costing them millions in income.

Republicans in the House could probably pass a funding bill for the wall — but not with the likes of Ryan as its leadership. Ryan is open borders and cheap labor and in the pocket of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kochs and others. That’s why nothing has been done for the last two years.

Chart
https://www.statista.com/chart/10146/150-million-people-would-move-to-the-us-if-they-could/

These numbers are now old: “The 150 million people whom Gallup estimated would like to come to the United States includes 22 million Chinese, 15 million Nigerians, 10 million Indians, 8 million Bangladeshis, 7 million Brazilians, 5 million Filipinos, 5 million Japanese, 5 million Mexicans, and 3 million each from Vietnam, Kenya and the United Kingdom.

In Liberia, 37 percent of all adults want to leave their homeland and move permanently to the United States of America. In Sierra Leone, it’s 30 percent. In Dominican Republic, it’s 26 percent. In Haiti, it’s 24 percent. And in Cambodia, it’s 22 percent.”

Would have to be under a reconciliation bill. Not sure if that can be done quickly.

“even if we had a wall, the next Dem president will just open up the gates.”

There is no one silver bullet, but the Left hates the wall so much because it is the hardest component to turn off.

A million tons of concrete and steel will endure.

Why not? This may be the only chance to get a wall built with this president. It’s something these Republicans can do for their country without worrying about political repercussions and give the Democrats a big middle finger.

True but we know who opened the gates and punish them in the next election.

That is certainly the theory; however, connected politicians have developed all manner of successful tactics while in office for providing for a secure future.

For example, see Mr. & Mrs. BJ and Mr. & Mrs. O who played ball and were/are very well-rewarded after their two terms. Quite easy to imagine Rino Ryan's future is also well-funded.

Passing it in the house can happen. Then it goes to the senate where they need 60 votes due to the Byrd rule as its a spending bill. Trump is right. They need 10 democraps to vote for the package, but Schumer won’t let them. So Pelosi and Schumer are full of #### saying he could get it now, and they know it.

Ryan is the tool of the Koch Brothers whose business it is to bring illegals in.
