Ocasio-Cortez Suggests Ditching Columbus Day For Election Day Holiday
Huffington Post ^ | November 19, 2018 | Andy McDonald

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the incoming U.S. representative from New York City, has an idea that could make voting easier: Take Columbus Day off the federal holiday list and replace it with Election Day.

In a tweet Saturday, the progressive Democrat wondered why Columbus Day is a federal holiday while Election Day, when we engage in perhaps our most important civic duty, is not.

Columbus Day, after all, celebrates a man who never actually set foot in what is now the United States and who certainly did not “discover” America.

Daily Mail editor David Martosko tried to make a joke about Ocasio-Cortez “angling for more vacation days” before even beginning her new job.

You posted this thread, and then posted this, so I think it’s fair to ask: Do you agree with this loon, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on this?

Columbus has a flawed history.

I would have to say the history that says Columbus has a flawed history is flawed. He was arguably one of the two or three best navigators in history. (And one of the greatest salesmen.) He landed in the Bahamas--four times in four voyages! That was his job, no?

No accurate maps existed. He had no sextant--they weren't invented. Navigators had to use the sun and a little paper device. Only way to tell your speed was to throw a piece of flotsam off the bow and watch how long it took for the stern to pass by it. He consecrated his voyages to God and ran the ship like a monastery--he and his men prayed the hours (that's 7 times a day).

He protected the Arawak Indians, who welcomed him, against the Caribs--who were raiding and eating them. The Caribs' home island, Caniba, is where we get the word "cannibal." Columbus kept detailed notes, came back, and made his sponsors rich and powerful beyond anyone's dreams. In fact, he set the mark for what a modern explorer is supposed to do, as opposed to the traditional rape and pillage. When you compare Columbus to the semi-pirates who usually did that kind of work--or to MLK--the guy was a saint.

Don't buy what the Communists are selling, ever. They always lie and distort.

Wikipedia: “It is generally observed nowadays by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service, other federal agencies, most state government offices, many businesses, and most school districts. Some businesses and some stock exchanges remain open, and some states and municipalities abstain from observing the holiday.”

Oh, I agree. Election Day is just fine. It’s worked for years....well, mostly except in select places like Broward County and Palm Beach County.

What Columbus accomplished is worth celebrating. Sorry Indians, but the indigenous culture of the time could never have accomplished what Columbus did.

I hate to say it, but she has a point. Although instead of eliminating Columbus Day, I would make Election Day a once every 2 year Federal Holiday, to give citizens time off to go to the polls and vote, and take MLK’s birthday off the Federal Holiday calendar. Turn October 12 into “Explorers’ Day,” to celebrate all the men, from Leif Eriksson to Henry Hudson who brought the New World to the Old World’s attention. On years when there is not an National election, celebrate Lincoln’s and Washington’s Birthdays on their original dates. When there is an election, celebrate “President’s Day” as currently.

Do you suppose the news media folks have to make a special effort to keep a straight face while interviewing her and getting this great humor grist, only to lose it when they turn their backs and walk away, dissolved in laughter?

Can you see Occasional-Kotex making a motion for a committee to consider?

Oh to be a fly on that wall, LOL.

Any Congress critter needs to be relatively expert in RRO.
I bet Occasional-Kotex hasn’t even cracked the cover on her copy.

MLK is the 15th of January. New Administration takes over on the 20th. Plenty of time to count votes. Vote on Monday and make it a national holiday. Vets and seniors can vote the Friday before, thereby unclogging the lines. Require each voter to bring with them a SAMPLE ballot and give them 2 minutes in the booth. Paper ballots. Guarantee the nation will know who won by 9pm EST. Anybody wanting to travel that weekend will be SOL. Cops to transfer the ballots IN COP CARS.

If we are going to ‘change’ holidays or make new ones, how about making election day the day or two after tax day.

Of course that has gotten strung out also but would be nice to have people vote a couple days after they write their tax checks..

OF course, those that get more back than they earned would also show up.

We already extended number of voting days so democrats could more easily steal the elections. Now they want a day off to help steal them?

False. He did not visit North America, but he visited Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, which are part of United States.

Okay. The second Monday and Tuesday of November, national holidays, very restricted absentee only for those who absolutely need it. No provisionals, no motor voter, no same day registration, strict voter ID laws with photos and/or chips, no ID no vote. No reporting on results until the polls close in Hawaii.

I’ll make that deal. Let’s see how serious the democrats are.
