Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the incoming U.S. representative from New York City, has an idea that could make voting easier: Take Columbus Day off the federal holiday list and replace it with Election Day.
In a tweet Saturday, the progressive Democrat wondered why Columbus Day is a federal holiday while Election Day, when we engage in perhaps our most important civic duty, is not.
Columbus Day, after all, celebrates a man who never actually set foot in what is now the United States and who certainly did not “discover” America.
Daily Mail editor David Martosko tried to make a joke about Ocasio-Cortez “angling for more vacation days” before even beginning her new job.

I have heard others on our side of the aisle calling for providing two-three days off for elections. This would do away with the early voting and provisional ballot nonsense.
So the government workers can go vote but the private sector still has to work the poll visit into their own schedule?
The public generally does NOT get off for Columbus Day. But then she doesn’t know much about office work, does she?
Leave Columbus Day alone. Replace MLK day with election day if they want.

But I thought they already changed it to “Indigenous People’s Day. Is AOC some kind of racist, taking away the one day that our Aboriginal Americans can feel good about.
She’ll be shocked at how DC works and will complain. Suddenly she will sit in the back row and be silent, voting the Dem’s line like a good soldier. Then she will be a millionaire within 5 years.

There are yet words that adequately describe her flavor of stupid.
First, most companies and most certainly the government allow their employees to take time off to vote on election day.
Those companies that don’t aren’t going to even if it is made a Federal Holiday.
So... what would be the point ?
