Flushed wipes cause Charleston Water System backup
News 2 (Charleston SC) ^ | 10/17/2018 | Natalie Price

AMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) - Workers at the Charleston Water System Plum Island Facility had their hands full over the weekend when the system was clogged by a massive amount of wipes.

"It took a few days for us to get divers in here to actually dive down about 80 feet into raw sewage with their bare hands and feel around in total darkness," said Mike Saia, Communications Manager, Charleston Water System.

Those divers found mounds and mounds of flushed wipes. They clogged the system and caused a huge backup. While the system is clear now, there are still wipes around the facility from the overflow.

"They might do a lot of damage inside your home to your plumbing. They definitely do a lot of damage when they make their way through our infrastructure," said Saia.

When a wipe disappears down a toilet, so does your money. Maintenance is tied into your water rate and it costs a lot to clean messes like this.

One of the divers says going down into the wells is a big task.

"When you get down to the bottom, you can't see anything, everything is done by feel," said diver John Lares.

It's a lot of trouble that can be prevented by just throwing your wipes away.

Oh no, they are flushable. They are just not bio degradable. Plumber bud of mine told me that it’s one of the worse things for your septic system.

These are made of water-soluble cellulose. Disintegrates after 24 hours.

Yep. Wipes are hell on septic systems. Especially those with filters to strain the soup before it heads into the drain field.

I have lived rural on wells & septic systems for 41 of my 78 years. It is almost impossible to explain to city people what they can do with their septic systems & what they CAN NOT do. Telling them that the toilet paper like Cottonelle is too fiberous to break down in the septic is just one example. Also-—NO use of a ‘garbage disposer’ with a septic.

One neighbor has totally ignored me. I told him he better have about $10,000 saved to replace his septic & leach lines.

I am careful what I use, and I also use Bio-Clean every month to keep the bacteria active.

That sounds better. Who wrote that crap (heh, heh) about “bare hands”?

Still, there’s no dry suit and SCUBA in the world that would get me down there. Those are brave people.

“most of the money comes from repair.”

Good for you.

In utter desperation my daughter paid a plumber $600.00 for draining out a very small cellar———it took him about 3/4 of an hour-—and this was 20 years ago.

We just bought a second home with a tank and a grinder/pump. There is a slight uphill flow to the local sewage plant. No leach field. Apparently the city sewer line is slightly pressurized until it “gets over the hump” and it is then downhill to the sewage plant.

It has a pump system with an outdoor control panel with an audible alarm and red light. No operating instructions came with it.

I’ve contacted the local companies that maintain septic systems and pump them out, how frequently they need pumping, companies that change the pumps, and the local sewer district to find out how to maintain this thing and what to do if the alarm sounds. It is surprising how little info I’ve been able to get for it. I don’t now if I have to live like we are on a full septic system with a leech field (per your rules) or if we can live like we are on a city sanitary sewer. Also, do I need to use a monthly cleaner?

Very frustrating! I hate to guess and find out I have a big maintenance bill. No matter where I live, grease in the sink drains has always been a big no-no. I also use the disposal very sparingly - actually hardly at all.

I don't even flush Kleenex!
TP these days practically disintegrates on contact.. Could be the reason wipes are so popular.

You mean Hillary's "Stool Groom"?

In Merry Olde England, it was a privileged, well-respected gig to handle the monarch's waste. The Stool Groom even took notes on the sovereign's movements. In 1539, Henry VIII's groom wrote that the King had taken laxatives and experienced "a very fair siege." Sounds like a good description for what Her Royal Heinous' explosive blows.

This topic came up earlier today. See A 16th-Century Guide to Pooping at King Henry VIII's Hampton Court Palace. You never know what's going to be happenin' on FR on any given day. ;>)

Those wipes play hell here in Taxes with the State’s mandated aeration septic systems. They constantly run fans and pumps to work and have to be maintained twice a year by a state licensed worker. If it fails you’ve got to call the worker out to fix. This same system is illegal in Arkansas where the traditional none mechanized systems are approved.

"Bad system design. Blamed on customers. Typical."

Not if the system was built before wet wipes were invented.

According to a friend with a plumbing business the ones that are supposed to be OK to flush are making him rich.

...

I just had to do some research and apparently some are much better than others. Even some toilet paper has trouble degrading.

Here’s an entertaining video.

Apparently Consumer Reports did a recent test, but I’ll look for that some other time.

This is probably one of those rare times when government regulations would make sense.

Whoa! As of right now I live in an apartment & just like a month I’m having issues with my toilet. I never had problems with after moving in back in 2000. Now I do, I couldn’t flush and the water level rose to the top thinking it would over flow. I later learned that other tenants were flushing sanitary pads down the drain. Again, it happened & the manager told me to no longer flush used bath tissue. I’m not happy because I find that unsanitary. Especially dealing with smell. I know my aunt in Mexico we would toss it in a waste basket next to the toilet. She would later take the basket later to burn the tissue in a heater to warm the water for shower. So that is what I’m doing, except for the burning, I think that is illegal.
