Trump drops civil tone, slams Kavanaugh accuser credibility

WASHINGTON (AP) — Abandoning his previous restraint, President Donald Trump challenged by name the woman accusing his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault on Friday, declaring that if the alleged attack was so terrible she would have reported it to law enforcement.

Trump’s change in tone — and apparent shift in tactics — came as Christine Blasey Ford’s lawyers negotiate with the Senate Judiciary Committee on the terms for her possible testimony next week in a dramatic showdown over her accusation that threatens Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Trump tweeted: “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!”

The president previously had avoided naming Ford or plainly casting doubt on her account. Ford alleges Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her more than 30 years ago when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation.

For the last 2 years there are those in here who have questioned President Trump’s “tweets” only to learn a short time later that he knew exactly what he was doing and how well it worked for him AND the American people...

He is NOT a “professional politician” who checks the wind before ever saying anything....

He is ONE OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You fail to understand me. I am concerned that his tweet will be used as a reason to delay the confirmation. It needs to move forward and Ford needs to be left behind, a insignificant blip in the history of USSC nominations.

You surely aren’t serious about polls, are you???

What are you basing your claim on?

If the situation were reversed and it was a Dem nominee for SCOTUS, the Dems would destroy the woman similar to what Clinton did with his bimbo eruptions or ignore the claims like what is now happening with the Keith Ellison case. The Dems are street fighters who play to win at any cost. Trump is a street fighter, but the rest of the GOP is composed of effete cowards who lack a backbone. They resist confrontation at all costs.

Trump, in his sarcastic, Queens language, is stating the obvious. Now the pearl clutchers in the GOP are having a touch of the vapors because Trump is calling into question the veracity of Ford who has been given a pass.

Thirty-four percent of registered voters support his confirmation, while 38 percent oppose it, according to the survey. More than a quarter of respondents said they do not know enough to say.

You realize that the opposition to Kavanaugh's confirmation is at least ten points lower than the opposition to Trump as President of the United States, don't you?

These poll numbers should give us all a lot of confidence, because they accurately reflect what is likely the general public sentiment about Kavanaugh: Most people probably don't really give a sh!t one way or another. I suspected this was the case two days ago -- when my own local news media website that is pathologically opposed to Donald Trump stopped even reporting on the Kavanaugh/Ford story.

Is anyone outside the Beltway and New York City media even covering this anymore?

I agree with you. I simply meant Trump should not have implied that the reason there was no report was because the alleged assault was not severe enough. We know there was never a report filed. I’d rather the conclusion be “Because nothing happened than it wasn’t bad enough.”

I’ll add your name to the list of Freepers who think a political process should play out like a WWE wrestling event. Thanks.

If Judge Kavanaugh’s Nomination is Voted down, he should Sue Professor Ford for her Slanderous Accusations against him.

After 36 Years and use of Repressed Memory Therapy, all of a sudden she has a crystal clear memory of events, except when she doesn’t.

He said, she said, but magically the “she” in the equation is give Carte Blanche while the “he” is Guilty without any proof of the allegation’s veracity.

Her Case wouldn’t pass muster on Judge Judy.

But what are you basing your claim on?

And for the record I expect Kavanaugh will be confirmed and placed on the court, regardless of popularity in the polls. This isn't an election.

The only “poll” I trust is the one that comes out AFTER election day with the vote totals.......

In one post you say we are fighting a battle and need to treat it that way.

Then you turn around in your next post and criticize President Trump for posting a Twitter message that might be so insensitive that Kavanaugh's confirmation gets delayed.

That's like saying FDR and General MacArthur should never use the term "Japs" because it might cause people in Congress to stop supporting the war effort in 1943.

No offense, but I think Christine "Betty" Ford is no more unhinged than a lot of people right here on FreeRepublic.

When you hold the high ground you don’t yield the high ground.

High ground? LOL. The surrender monkey GOP is waving the white flag and retreating as fast as they can. And they will keep on doing that right up to election day because in the end they prefer progressive ideals to conservative voters.

The Dems don't need a reason to delay the vote. It has been their objective all along and remains so. We will see what will happen by how Grassley responds to the absurd list of demands. The goal posts have been moved again and again.

The timing of the release of these allegations after the hearings and just before the committee vote was always part of the insurance plan. With or without a tweet, the Dems will still delay and delay hoping for more GOP concessions.

I’ve seen lots of polls. I am also taking cues from the negotiating behavior of the various parties. It’s quite revelatory.
