Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) vowed Thursday that if Democrats take control of the House or Senate in November they would launch a probe into the FBI's handling of sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Whitehouse said during an interview on CNN's "The Lead" that Democrats would “get to the bottom” of what happened between Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford at a high school party where Ford claims Kavanaugh assaulted her.
Kavanaugh has strongly denied the allegations after Ford came forward on Sunday, and both have indicated that they are willing to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee sometime next week.
“I think we’ll also be investigating why the FBI stood down its background investigation when it came up in this particular background,” Whitehouse said on CNN.
“It’s particularly preposterous in this case when you have an FBI background investigation, and this is part of this guy’s background, and they’ve suddenly decided they’re going to halt the background investigation? It makes no sense, and it is appalling practice from a victim-witness point of view,” he added.
Whitehouse on Thursday joined seven other Democratic senators, who have previously served as prosecutors, in calling for an FBI investigation into Ford’s allegations.
Democrats have pushed for the FBI to reopen its background check investigation into Kavanaugh, whom President Trump nominated in July to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Republicans, meanwhile, have said that Kavanaugh and Ford should come before the Judiciary Committee. Ford on Thursday opened the door to testifying next week under certain terms, though her lawyer has said she won't appear for a hearing on Monday as requested by the GOP.
“The Constitution assigns the Senate, and only the Senate, with the task of advising the president on his nominees and consenting if the circumstances merit,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote in the letter to Democrats on the panel.
“The job of assessing and investigating a nominee’s qualifications in order to decide whether to consent to the nomination is ours, and ours alone.”
Democrats have noted that the FBI investigated Anita Hill’s allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas in 1991.
“That decision was praised by Republican senators including Sen. Hatch, who called it the ‘right thing to do,’ and the FBI finished its work in three days,” Democrats wrote recently, referring to Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), one of three Judiciary panel members who participated in Thomas’s confirmation hearings.

And that’s a lousy premise for a criticism of the FBI, when the whole Democrat party stood down on the rapes and battery by Bill Clinton at the behest of his moll.

The FBI is going to have to hire thousands of agents because every High School is going tp need at least a dozen or more.

Whitehouse would get shut down in a NY minute. It is NOT the job of the FBI to pursue a claim that properly is under the jurisdiction of local authorities; it is not their job to pursue a claim with no facts as to date, time, place. AND which has passed reasonable Statutes of Limitations. NOR for wich thee are there any corroborating witnesses.

Exactly. Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill,worked for the federal government. There is nothing for even state prosecutors to go by. Imagine if they opened a case after the statute of limitations. Banana republic.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh has had six FBI background checks. How many of us have had even one?
IMHO the most recent FBI background check was in preparation for his Supreme Court nomination. Has anything new come up in the period of time since that investigation was completed?
As a practical matter, this investigation will take months - not weeks - to complete. To do a proper check the FBI will have to roll the entire city back to the early 1980s. Starting with the easy part - which houses had swimming pools back then? Then you need to get the tax records from that era - only people living back then are persons of record/interest. Then you will need a medical assessment of those people - the parents of that era will be in their 80s, or older. The memory of a person affected with age related illnesses is questionable at best; the children will be in their 50s.
IMHO the leftists are trading on the Mueller probe - haven’t most of the convictions involved “lying to the FBI”?
Final thought - Ms Christine Blasey Ford has neither the time or money to any of the above basic background research and is trying to get the Federal Government - via the FBI - to do it all for her.
If she filed the accusation of sexual assault by a minor before the statute of limitation ran out in Montgomery County Maryland I’d believe her.
But this is just Soros attacks again.

if she filed it in 1981 kavanaugh was a minor and even if coonvicted likely of lesser charge could have had it expunged..
