Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) vowed Thursday that if Democrats take control of the House or Senate in November they would launch a probe into the FBI's handling of sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Whitehouse said during an interview on CNN's "The Lead" that Democrats would “get to the bottom” of what happened between Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford at a high school party where Ford claims Kavanaugh assaulted her.
Kavanaugh has strongly denied the allegations after Ford came forward on Sunday, and both have indicated that they are willing to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee sometime next week.
“I think we’ll also be investigating why the FBI stood down its background investigation when it came up in this particular background,” Whitehouse said on CNN.
“It’s particularly preposterous in this case when you have an FBI background investigation, and this is part of this guy’s background, and they’ve suddenly decided they’re going to halt the background investigation? It makes no sense, and it is appalling practice from a victim-witness point of view,” he added.
Whitehouse on Thursday joined seven other Democratic senators, who have previously served as prosecutors, in calling for an FBI investigation into Ford’s allegations.
Democrats have pushed for the FBI to reopen its background check investigation into Kavanaugh, whom President Trump nominated in July to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Republicans, meanwhile, have said that Kavanaugh and Ford should come before the Judiciary Committee. Ford on Thursday opened the door to testifying next week under certain terms, though her lawyer has said she won't appear for a hearing on Monday as requested by the GOP.
“The Constitution assigns the Senate, and only the Senate, with the task of advising the president on his nominees and consenting if the circumstances merit,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote in the letter to Democrats on the panel.
“The job of assessing and investigating a nominee’s qualifications in order to decide whether to consent to the nomination is ours, and ours alone.”
Democrats have noted that the FBI investigated Anita Hill’s allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas in 1991.
“That decision was praised by Republican senators including Sen. Hatch, who called it the ‘right thing to do,’ and the FBI finished its work in three days,” Democrats wrote recently, referring to Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), one of three Judiciary panel members who participated in Thomas’s confirmation hearings.
Now Democrats are attacking the credibility and integrity of the FBI.

Why did the FBI stand down? Simple. The whole story is a joke full of forgetfulness and hearsay.
Seriously? Do they not understand the roles of each branch of our government? Why are they not doing the investigation as it is Congress’ responsibility? Senator Grassley spelled this out very clearly in his letters.
Because the FBI only covers FEDERAL cases (federal lands, interstate commerce), not state cases.
Apparently this dolt wants to live by the Napoleonic code.

How could the FBI investigate something that Ms. Ford claims to have remembered in 2012 and evidently didn’t report to anyone until 2017?
Dems are so stupid they expect their politicized arm the FBI to destroy anyone like they did under Comey and now Mueller’s prosecutions, with hundreds of Lisa Page types working hard to slander and frame anyone not a Dem. Simple.
It is up to us, the good people, to root out and destroy the Dem Party for this. We cannot allow a Gestapo led by Dems to ruin our lives.

They were federal employees at the time, numbnutz. You want the FBI to go out and investigate unsubstantiated claims that are not a federal matter from 35 years ago, involving juveniles. Gotcha.

They had letters, work relations, work patterns, etc. There was something someone could actually INVESTIGATE, versus, “Sometime in the 80s I went to a party somewhere with someone and was attacked, but I kept it all secret for 30+ years and even then didn’t name names. But don’t ask me when, where, who, how or why. I don’t remember.”
No respect for law. No respect for the rights of the accused. No respect for verifying an allegation. No respect for facts. No respect for evidence or lack of same. No respect for limit of government power.
Yep that would be the Democrats. Let’s be honest they yearn for a totalitarian regime and confirming Kavanaugh would interfere with that dream.
