On a chilly winter day in 1929, Halil Edhem, the Director of Turkey's National Museum, was hunched over his solitary task of classifying documents. He pulled towards him a map drawn on Roe deer skin. As Halil opened the chart to its full dimensions (two feet by three feet wide or 60 X 90 cm) he was surprised by how much of the New World was depicted on a map which dated from 1513.
The document was the legacy of a pirate turned Turkish Admiral, Piri Reis ( circa 1470-1554). He was born in Gallipoli, a naval base on the Marmara Sea and was the nephew of Kemal Reis, a pirate who had reinvented himself as a Turkish Admiral adventurer who had made his name in naval warfare. At the time, the distinction between pirate and Admiral was more flexible than might be expected from looking back through a Hollywood lens.

Is this the one where the Muslims stole other people maps and pieced them together
looks more like Australia than New Orleans
Everybody did it in those days...............It was SOP for military and pirates alike.................
Kooky but very fun article. Thanks for posting.
Have you tried applying a reactant and heat to the back?
Good artwork on the ships.
Almost too good.
One of the curious things is that it has land outlines of Antarctica, which probably wouldn’t have been possible for 10,000 to 12,000 (when the last big ice age ended). So it would suggest seafaring men existed...more than 12,000 years ago.
If you read the full article, he was a perfectionist.............
looks like a Rorschach ink blot test for psychiatric studies
Waiting on Giorgio Tsouklalos’s confirmation on the origin of the map, but I think I know the answer.
Where was this found, the Democrats 2018 situation room?
They don’t exhibit any knowledge of stuff that post dates it.
I.e., Reis was now expected to confine his piracy to infidels. Murder, rape, pillage and the taking of slaves, as long as the victims were Christian, remained religious duties.
Georgio has mentioned the map in one or more segments of the Ancient Aliens show, but not with this detail about the tests on it.
Several things I hadn’t heard before including the stuff about the projection from the latitude of Syrene theory. Not necessarily connected with Egypt’s ancient civilization but a data point of interest.
There is a book out called “Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings”. That postulates the existence of sea faring civilizations at least at the Minoan of early Phoenician technology level in the Indian Ocean & Indonesian island area. Some say they may have been in existence prior to the last major transcontinental glaciation the maps are a relic of their existence.
1500 as ancient? The dawn of civilization?
How about 4000 years before that!
That’s when the study of the continents and latitudes projection comes in to date the original document. The 1513 map was a copy of some older map whose origin no one knows.
You have to read the article to get that.
Plato, Aristotle, Archimedes, Euclid, Ptolemy, and Roger Bacon all lived long before the beginnings of civilization?
