Report: Trump wants to announce Supreme Court nominee by July 11
The Week ^ | 06/29/18

The upcoming NATO summit starts July 11, and before he leaves for Brussels, President Trump plans on announcing his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Democrats worry that Trump's nominee will scale back reproductive rights, while Republicans are hoping to fast track the confirmation process, with hearings in mid-August and a full Senate vote ahead of the November midterm elections. The GOP is in control of only 51 of the Senate's seats, and the White House announced late Thursday that Trump spent the evening meeting with three Democratic senators from red states who voted to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch — Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

They were joined by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Collins and Murkowski have stated they agree with Roe v Wade, and Collins on Thursday gave some insight into the type of person she would like to replace Kennedy. "I do not apply ideological litmus tests to nominees, but I want to see integrity, intellect, a respect for precedent, and an adherence to the rule of law," she said. In her view, Kennedy was an "ideal justice."

Oh good....the press will have two things to deal with....like tapping their head and rubbing their belly at the same time.

And we know they can't handle that.

A respect for precedent??

There is absolute Precedent for overturning a previous decision by the court.

That gives Ginsburg, Kagan, Sotomayor time to tender their resignations as well.

My prediction is that Buzzi hangs on, probably dies in office, at which time Breyer retires and probably Thomas too.

Trump should get three more picks.

Good timeline. Quicker the better. Make the press choose between mocking the foreign trip as they usually would or smearing the nominee as they usually would. Decisions decisions lol

The president's list of candidates for the Supreme Court is outstanding. That said, I would strongly encourage him to select Sen. Mike Lee. There's no doubt at all that he'd be absolutely faithful to the Constitution. And this is a life-time appointment, after all.

They won't leave unless they're wheeled out on a stretcher.

Not the time to possibly mess up a Senate seat.

Depends on how long Trump holds a grudge. How does everybody feel about Amy Coney Barrett? Is she strong enough to hold fast to Conservative principles? Or would she fold like a cheap suit when bullied by Big Media and the Leftists on the SCOTUS?

The Court got Dred Scott wrong, didn't it?
The Court got Plessy v Ferguson wrong, didn't?

Precedent is fine, but much of what SCOTUS has done needs to be overturned.
