President Donald Trump's historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday, following on the heels of the two Korean leaders meeting a little over two months ago, has raised the question of whether North Korea and South Korea would ever reunite.
Analysts say unifying North and South Korea could cost a trillion dollars under the best of circumstances and take several decades. The final price tag would also depend largely on what the catalyst for reunification is.
Some analyses put the cost of reunification at far more -- closer to $3 trillion. Experts argue that much of the cost surrounding any scenario for Korean unification would depend on whether the countries decided to converge gradually or if a chaotic event occurs. If the reform were carefully planned and followed by a peaceful union, it would be far less expensive than if North Korea's economy collapsed or a war broke out, requiring massive reconstruction costs.....

.... Well ... There ya go .... It's actually gonna cost money so we better just give Kim Jong an unlimited supply of nukes and just forget this whole thing!!! Damn .... Who would have thought there would be expenses to the reunification of two nations ....
Yup, no names, no associated firms, just unnamed “analysts”. No other citations. So as long as you say, “some analysts” or “sources told CBS” it’s all good and 100% credible. Hogwash. Of course there will be costs.
Always endeavoring to find the clouds in the silver lining, unless of course it’s Obama and then everything is always unquestionably rainbows and Skittles.
Does anyone explain why reunification should be a goal or why it is any business of the US whether they unify or not?
Should the US and Canada unite just because we have the same language, Germany and Austria?
I think I’ll get the first Chick-fil-A franchise in N.K.
Cost is a false premise. The question is whether the economic activity is going to lead to virtuous or vicious growth.
A hurricane creates economic activity, but it is vicious, since its recovery.
With NK, you have the opportunity to build plant an infrastructure to leap frog what exists in a country like the US that still suspends its telephone cables above the earth.
We are spending beau coup to man and equip the DMZ. Talk about vicious economic activity creating no wealth at all.
That good news as well. Means lots of jobs and lots of business opportunities. Just look at what we have spent on A,I and S. The real challenge is social. A lot of people who have hardly a clue.
What would it cost if NK nuked Guam or Japan? Or California?
Absolutely pathetic. CBS hoping as hard as they can that reunification doesn’t happen under President Trump.
North Korea has massive reserves of critical rare earth elements that Samsung LG and Hyundai all need. And NK could quickly become the new go-to location for cheap factories, displacing Vietnam
The cost of unifying th USA has cost way more thanks to the efforts of blue states like California and Massachusetts to bankrupt us.
South Korea is a world leader in finance and industry. They can handle it.
Not our circus. Not our monkeys.
...Agree
“Since when do liberals worry over the cost of ANYTHING?............................”
That’s easy.
If anything costs liberals a modicum of power, libs will be concerned about any financial aspects of a proposal. If teaching people how to work instead of accept welfare checks cost $0.01 per person, then that cost would be subjected to an unholy number of cost-benefit analysis and committee discussion. It would take years to determine if $0.01 per person would be worth it. They know losing a person on welfare to work means that they can potentially lose a voter.
If it benefits their power structure, then cost be damned!
Question for Jillian....
Whom, as are you suggesting will pay those “millions or trillions”?
Germans mattered but Koreans dont?
Elitist snobs hate freedom when theyre not in charge!
Very similar undertaking albeit that the chasm between North and South Korea are even greater.
One of my business colleagues (from Germany) summed it up thus "It is amazing how much creative and productive energy is unleashed when millions of people find themselves working real jobs rather than spying on their neighbors and engaging in bureaucratic make-work projects."
Remember, it was Reagan himself who predicted that when the Berlin Wall finally came down, the news would be greeted on the left with headlines such as
Make Mexico and Canada pay for it.
With the EU, conceivably if East and West Germany still existed, there wouldn’t be too much difference, both would have adopted the Euro, for example.
You nailed it. People and money mean nothing to the left. They steal what they want from taxpayers and people are expendable. Taking a "crisis" off the table hurts the cause. Giving credit to the man who beat their queen is unconscionable. When America wins, the left loses.
