A dozen House lawmakers have introduced legislation to remove President Trump's tariffs on Canadian newsprint so a study can be done on how much those tariffs are crushing local newspapers around the country.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., is a response to the 22 percent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on some Canadian newsprint since the beginning of this year. Noem said that tariff has led to rising costs for local newspapers, and are a threat to their survival.
"In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have increased paper prices by 20 to 30 percent," Noem said in a statement. "That's significant. A paper that services around 20,000 customers, for instance, could see paper costs rise by about a quarter-million dollars annually, threatening the newspaper's survival."

Tariffs are killing newsprint just like tariffs killed slide rules.
Too bad, so sad.
Pass me a beer.

Just have more reporters have affairs with sources in exchange for security news leaks. That will keep costs down to compensate for rising newsprint cost.
Ya think he doesn’t know that? tee hee
Trees are happy. Seriously, many states do not apply sales tax to newspapers. Assuming that newsprint does not make up more than 1/3rd the cost of the newspaper, it is just the same as if a state with a 7.5% sales tax applied it to newspapers. States do that kind of expansion all the time. There was no shortage of newspapers lauding expansion of sales tax to, say, auto repair shops when it was applied to labor as well as parts, making a similar cost increase.
and it’s clear we are out of trees in the US
[Trump’s tariff on Canadian newsprint is killing US newspapers]
UNBELIEVABLE! Local newspapers were going down the tube long before PRESIDENT TRUMP announced a tariff on Canadian newsprint. Our hometown newspaper is only 5 pages. 10 years ago it had several editions.
Blame higher subscription prices and advertising fees, as well as, LIBERAL CONTENT.
Having once been a paper sales man and in the forest products industry for 35 years - and speaking on raw material costs not the state of media - what killed the US newsprint industry was knee jerk environmentalism that prevented our paper industry from modernizing and growing to compete against countries that had little or no environmental standards. This is why Canada has newsprint to sell and we do not.
The papers will just charge the Rats a little more to publish fawning articles for them.
Why don’t these newspapers use RECYCLED paper?
Gee, do you think a REPORTER will ask them??
Awwwww! my heart bleeds for the radical leftists in charge of newspapers.
Is that what you call A two-fer?
I thought U.S. newspapers had killed themselves.
Kudos for your recognition of the fact that Canada has long delivered snotty lectures to us about environmentalism while continuing to pollute their own country at-will.
Baby Pierre is being intransigent and gambling that Canada's failure to negotiate will cost Trump big time in the mid terms. Looks like he got bit first with the massive loss of seats for his party in the Ontario provincial elections recently. Ontario accounts for almost 40% of the Canadian electorate and doesn't bode well for Baby Pierre continuting in office.
Cowgrrl Kristi needs to heed the tea leaves and move towards online info
Newspapers dyin’ be good
No, they did that pretty much on their own.
All those that purchase a freaking newspaper raise their hand...
bueller?
bueller?
Perhaps the Timber Pulp industry should find better more advanced things to do with their products...
I don’t know what I’ll line my pigeon cages with when there are no more newspapers.
