Why North Korea will give up its nukes
WaPo ^ | 1 May 2018 | Spencer Kim

SEOUL — I hear it so often. The most important thing to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is regime survival and the most important thing to him is his nuclear arsenal. But by historically meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in Friday, Pyongyang has shown what is most important. Nukes are, and always were, subservient to regime well-being.

Kim, who has god-like status among his people, has in effect told them four things: 1) The nukes program has served its purpose, and we will stop work on it now. 2) All efforts will focus on making you rich, like the Chinese and South Koreans. 3) I have started a new era of Korean history by reaching out to the South. 4) Our nukes have tamed the Yankees, and now I am going to trade them for permanent security and leverage to make you rich.

Kim cannot now say, “Oops, I misread the situation — let’s go back to being poor but proud with nukes!” He has mounted a tiger and cannot get off without being eaten. He must ride it all the way to his destination.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. First, to U.S. President Donald Trump for his involvement, without which no deal was ever going to be made, and for pushing the maximum pressure campaign. This campaign is aimed at pushing Pyongyang into a corner so it has to choose between regime survival and nukes and has to thus cry uncle by choosing regime survival.

Second, Moon deserves credit for realizing that if he wanted to be “Nixon to China,” he had to first be Nixon by shoring up his right wing domestically and proving to his ally in the White House that he was also an advocate of maximum pressure,

It there any actual evidence of this? Are there North Korean broadcasts to back this up?

Or is the author simply asserting it?

Actually this is what really happened. When Pompeo met with the childless, overweight Kim who has a good looking wife, he gave him o a full bottle of 100 mg Viagra tablets as a personal gift from President Trump. He told him not to be offended but to give them a try. Trump swears by the. Soon he lost interest in launching missiles and nuclear explosions.

The one lesson the Kim family has learned over the decades in manipulating the West is you threaten, and then play nice to get concessions. Repeat as needed.

The question will be how Trump will respond when Kim again changes course.

“shoring up his right wing domestically”

“Right wing” is such a vague expression. He must be using it here in the broadest meaning of the phrase: “icky”.

It's been estimated they run out of money (as in empty treasury) by October 2018.

The nukes and missile thing was their last hope for extorting some cash and commodities from the west - Kim didn't realize Trump is a different critter.

Little rocket man is giving up his nukes because Trump smacked him down and told him to get in line.

Why North Korea will give up its nukes

___________________________________________

I believe there are no nukes to give up. Reports indicate that Kimmie has destroyed his nuclear testing range. Which was a mountain near the Chinese border. All his failures left that region in a Chernobyl like state and the Chicoms are furious.

It’s now time for Kim to make nice after he’s done shot hisself in the foot.

Yes, the simple premise of the article is true, and I’m sure Trump knew this.

THE SORRY SICK FACT IS, THE SAME OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED BY ANY OUR FORMER PRESIDENTS. INSTEAD THEY JUST KEPT PAYING THIS GUY.

Trump realized the nukes were a bluff. They were used to extort money from us. The fat man, however didn’t know how fair he could go with Trump without risking regime change. He knows now.

Trump should and probably will be very tough in the negotiations with NK. I think he will try and get as many concessions as he can on the front end and then lock them down.

When he arrives, he will surprise fatso with some new concessions...If NK refuses, he walks.

The Art of the Deal.

Actually, you are wrong. Your premise is false.

Although Trump is in fact a major factor, Xi is also very prominent as an applier of pressure. Then with pressure from both sides, the final straw was the collapse of the nuclear test site. That event was not killing a kim before. The collapse is the ultimate reason for Kim’s change of mind

Rods From God. Just sayin Project Thor came in handy. 3/4ths of NORK nuke scientists in the mountain. Our guys did not even have to ask permission. It hits like a MFer. No fallout. Left a chimney in the mountain. Liquefied the people in there. I wonder why Mattis said we may have to take “Kinetic” action. A tungsten rod coated in heat shielding ceramic shot down from high orbit with gravity assist is a hell of a kinetic weapon. 30,000 mph + at impact. Un was trying to get some of our 1945 tech. We did not stand still. Would you know we have stealth helos if it wasn’t for the crash in OBL’s compound?

There are many on FR that believe the Mountain’s collapse was caused by a “Rods of God” gift from POTUS Trump.

Bingo. The only thing Kim cares about is self-preservation and he doesn't see a scenario where that happens with a nuke-free North Korea.
