HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) A tiny parasite could become a big problem this year in New Jersey.
Its an exotic tick thats never been seen before in the United States. It was first spotted on a sheep in Hunterdon County, and efforts to wipe it out have failed.
New Jersey has always been home to different species of ticks five to be exact. But a new variety of the bloodsucking bug is now in the mix.
Its the East Asian tick, sometimes called a longhorned or bush tick. Originally found in Asia, thousands of them are now in the Garden State.
Their discovery started with a call.
A phone call from a resident in Hunterdon County that her sheep was infested with a lot of ticks. She brought some in and, low and behold, she was also covered in the same ticks, research microbiologist James Occi said. It was kind of an odd looking thing. She didnt know what it was, she had never seen them before.
Occi works with entomologists at Rutgers University who tested the ticks. He said steps were taken to kill them, but just a few days ago he used carbon dioxide traps and found a number of the pests survived.
Thats a problem, because like the deer ticks that spread Lyme disease, East Asian ticks have been known to spread a deadly virus called SFTS.
It has the potential. Thats why were worried, said Occi.
Residents who Finch spoke with said its alarming to think they have something new to worry about when they head outdoors.
Theres enough things you have to worry about. So hearing about new things that could potentially jeopardize the health of your home is something to be concerned about, Hoboken resident Laurena Morris said.
My biggest concern is that my dog would bring it home and somehow my son would get it, said Caitlin Dibetta.
More work has to be done to keep these out and find ways when they are introduced, to find natural predators to eliminate them, Steve Maikowski said.
Scientists will treat the affected farm with pesticide this week in hopes of eliminating the exotic pets. How the ticks made it to New Jersey in the first place is still a mystery.
Tests done on ticks found in November did not reveal any tick-borne diseases. The ticks collected a few days ago are being tested now.
Just ask PGA pro golfer Jimmy Walker.
Long passed due for bringing it back. It is safe to use around humans.
Amen to that from Ringoes.
SFTS. Sounds bad.
What country is it native to?
How long will it take to shut down immigration from there?
We are planning on being very vocal in front of the cdc. Annexs, mike and people from all over the country are coming. People dont realize that it can also be passed in uteroand sexually transmitted, too. Ive been collecting shoes from those who are too disabled to come and have been sent the kids shoes as well. My heart is breaking.
We’ve always been at war with Eastasia, Winston..................

The Spell-Checker Poem
More than an exercise in homophonous humor, “Candidate for a Pullet Surprise” endures as a cautionary tale for all those who place too much trust in spell checkers.

The documentary includes a case of a woman who passed lyme to her son in utero; his neuro deficits are devastating and at the time of production, completely dismissed as caused by lyme. God bless your efforts!
Ticks climb the leaves, wait for a mammal to pass by, then climb on board.
They don't usually transfer directly from mammal to mammal, so you probably won't get one from petting your dog.
I'm not an expert, I could be wrong, and Asian ticks could be different...
Woods and brush as well.

Thanks. It was one of the first things I watched after being diagnosed with chronic Lyme. Areal eye opener for those who think it always starts with a bulls eye rash, can be cured with a couple of weeks of antibiotics or that there are accurate tests. Misdiagnosed adALS, MS, hronic fatigue and many others. Sooooo sad!

Says the person who probably could never afford to live in Hunterdon County which by the way is the 4th wealthiest county (per capita income) in the entire United States and has the lowest rate of childhood poverty of any county in the country. It’s also very conservative politically and quite beautiful rural country.
