Doctors in the United States have performed the worlds first penis and scrotum transplant, performing the surgery on a US military sergeant severely injured several years ago in an IED blast in Afghanistan.
The man, whose name was not given, is recovering well and expected to regain both urinary and sexual function, said Richard Redett, who led the transplant team.
He told a press conference on Monday in Baltimore, where the team at Johns Hopkins hospital worked, that the patient underwent 14 hours of surgery in late March.
It is not the worlds first penis transplant that was carried out in 2014 in South Africa and nor is it the first in the US. That was in 2016 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
It is, however, the most significant transplant to date.
In addition to a large skin graft covering part of the sergeants abdomen, penis and scrotum, surgeons connected three arteries, four veins and two nerves to provide blood flow and sensation to the donated tissue. His internal organs were not damaged by the blast.
The sergeant did not receive testicles from his donor to avoid the ethical issues that might ensue if he later had children, said Damon Cooney, another transplant team member. The testicles would have contained sperm from the recently deceased donor.

Jokes, please write yourselves!
Was this a “package deal”?
OK, tired&Retired, for that you earn a promotion
to the circumcision procedure department. The base pay
is not particularly high but you get to keep all
the tips.
Could be a long, humorous day, huh? This is what
separates us from the other side.
These soldiers endure so many surgeries and years of rehab. I hope this outcome gives hope to many that need it.
Maybe they could implant some balls on Mitch McConnell...?
Mitch wouldn’t know what to do with balls if he had any.
But you don't have to call me Johnson!

No, no thank you. *crosses legs*
Any bets on how quickly this thread gets pulled?
Praying for the best kind of success here. This is wonderful news and I am very happy for the Sergeant and all his family and family to be.
I’ll take the John Holmes limited edition please.
We all may be surprised at how may of our wounded warriors have similar injuries Blast effects are not very considerate of soft tissues.
I know several men who were wounded in IED blasts- three of the four have similar injuries. Soft armor
How quickly the THREAD gets pulled???
I'm sure the soldier is wondering how long before he can pull something else.
That’s kind of weird. Couldn’t they just umm, exercise the old stuff out to have it replaced by the soldier’s swimmers?
For that matter, I’ve heard that they’re quite fragile and can be killed by heat, cold and electricity. Seems like they could have just killed what was in there and that would get replaced by his own supply.
Maybe not heat but an ice pack or a little electric shock treatment to the gonads.
Great that they are trying to help an injured Vet.
But let’s be clear, their ultimate goal is further advancing transgender surgeries.
Suddenly, without warning black men across the world started waking up in hotel bathtubs full of ice.

Don’t go tugging at the threads too soon or you might come away with more than you bargained for...or less, as the case may be.
As long as his wife doesnt start screaming some other guys name, I guess its alright.
Will it be detachable?
