There are many accidents on that stretch of I-10, almost all due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel. The whole way from Tallahassee to Mobile is the most boring stretch.................

How do you have a deep ravine in a county that is inches above sea level?

Lots of marsh and swamp along there, as I recall.

Alabama is like driving on the ocean floor. Dizzying hill after breathtaking valley.

I used to drive passenger coaches to transport kids to a Christian camp. It was about 500 miles each way from our start point near Detroit to the camp in the middle of the Upper Peninsula. To get the kids to camp at lunchtime on Saturday, we would depart about 2am Saturday morning.

The first driver shift was OK because the kids were all excited to see old friends and loud. We would make a pickup at about 3:30am. The shift was quiet, dark and boring. We always made sure the guy riding shotgun was awake to keep an eye on the driver just to be sure. Easy time to drop off.

Schools often ask such traveling bus drivers to do too much spread out over too long a day.

The entire Gulf Coast is one of my least favorite places in the country.

I remember driving between New Orleans and Houston, while it rained, and at one point for nearly an hour we had water up to the front bumper of the car, with no shoulder and everyone, including us, afraid to stop or drive faster than about 25MPH - just kept moving and praying. Vowed I would never make that car trip again, at any time, for any reason.

While in HSmy daughters band bussed from MD to Disney. She said the driver was going so fast she feared for her life. I had a family member pick her up and flew her home. The buses that travel between NY and DC are the same no Matter what the weather conditions.

Wow! Channelview is right across the Houston Ship Channel -- from where I played in the Pasadena Schools bands for six years.

As a former band member, band parent and band grandparent, I'm lifting up prayers from these Texas Piney Woods for the kids, leaders, parents and first responders impacted by this tragedy...
