Cape Town water crisis: 'My wife doesn't shower any more'
People have been forced to queue for extra water to top up their rations in Cape Town
The BBC's Mohammed Allie is one of millions of people trying to stave off Day Zero - the day the taps in the South African city of Cape Town will run dry. Here, he tells us what life is like when you have just 50 litres of water a day.
My wife does not use the shower any more. Instead, she boils about 1.5 litres of water and mixes it with about a litre of tap water to have her daily wash while the rest of us catch the slow running water in a bucket for re-use in the toilet cistern.
As for flushing, which in the past would have used around six litres at a time, we have adopted the popular slogan: "If it's yellow let it mellow and if it's brown flush it down."
Like most residents of Cape Town, my household of four has had to change our habits to conserve water. A bucket and jug have now become essential tools for me and my children when taking a quick two-minute shower.
In the height of summer, it doesn't feel like much.
In Mohammed Allie's house, daughter Khadeeja helps fill the toilet cistern with recycled water - while he drinks water from a container A severe drought has forced the city's municipality to limit water consumption to 50 litres per person per day in an effort to delay what has become known as Day Zero, which has been set for 12 April, when the water supply will be shut.
It isn't easy to reduce to just 50 litres a day per person

It was getting better, but then they decided that colonialism is bad. And here we are.
8 Mar: Daily Mail: AFP: Cape Town is saved from Day Zero: Water will NOT run out this year thanks to six weeks of restricted use - but it COULD run out in 2019
‘Provided we continue consuming water at current levels, and we receive decent winter rainfall this year, ‘Day Zero’ will not occur in 2018. This means the taps will stay open in 2018,’ he said in a statement.
However, Mr Maimane warned that this did not mean that Cape Town residents could return to frivolous water use as the risk of a Day Zero in future is still very real.
‘While it is now unlikely to occur in 2018, Day Zero is still a very real possibility during the 2019 summer months if we do not have significant rainfall this winter,’ said Maimane.
‘I want to reiterate, and cannot stress enough, that we need to keep at current consumptions levels until at least after the winter rainfall.’...
Strong summer rains saw much of southern Africa recover from a drought induced by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
But Mediterranean-like Cape Town receives most of its rain in the southern hemisphere’s winter — and scientists warn there is no guarantee of a good rainy season...

Didn’t S Africa and Israel conduct nuclear tests together?
IIRC, yes, yes they did; long ago.
See, see! Them bump stocks! AR-15s! Ban them! Ban them I say!
Indeed and it's quite sad. I have given up on a good percentage of "humanity" years ago. Multiculturalism and every other "ism" can FOAD. So one can say, "What about conservatism"? The pure nature of America's founding need no label. In South Africa's case it is revenge, tribalism, third world culturalism and pure hatred fueled by the fire of socialism/communism.
Agreed!
This article is horribly out of date. Day Zero had been predicted for 9 July. As of yesterday, that date is now 27 August which is in the middle of our rainy season. As long as we get a reasonable amount of rain Day Zero will not happen this year.
I have done this for weeks on end when traveling in our camper. If I put the warm water in a plastic bottle with a hole drilled in the cap it works just like a shower and gets me just as clean. This is not a great sacrifice.
‘My wife doesn’t shower any more’ duh she never did!
I know..who needs to see that. A quick Google search of images for “murder of white South African farmers” yields imahges that will haunt for the rest of days.
Now I see Brooklyn is trying out a voluntary program where people won’t flush their toilets after rainstorms because excess water in the sewers ends up spilling into the rivers without treatment. “Sanctuary city”...
The. His wife is British?
The solution is to kill more white people and seize more white-owned land. That’ll fix things right up...
MAAA
Agreed. While these particular socialist/communists have made ‘race’ their primary issue, the root of their evil is still ensconced in their ridiculous political and economic philosophies.
Neither had I. I suppose it’s possible he came up with it himself. If he did then it should be ranked among his top five quotes.
Put these same incompetent twits in charge of the Sahara and they soon have a shortage of sand.
So how are things in Cape Town?
