Something needs to change,' says Milwaukee native who turned in rifle to authorities
A Milwaukee native said enough is enough and turned his semi-automatic rifle into the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
Ben Dickmann grew up in Milwaukee, but moved to south Florida years ago. He shared a Facebook post of a sheriff's deputy taking possession of his AR-FiveSeven, which is similar to the AR-15 that was used in the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Dickmann said only law enforcement should have guns that powerful.
"Something needs to change, and it needs to change now," Dickmann said. "People have been doing nothing but talking about it for the last 10-15 years."
As of Friday night, the post had more than 200,000 reactions, and 90,000 shares. Hes been getting a lot of feedback.
"I would say 90 percent has been very positive," Dickmann said. "Ten percent has been very, very negative. Almost threatening."
But one message sticks out to him and reaffirmed his decision.
"I even got a message from one of the parents at Stoneman Douglas privately on Facebook, thanking me for what I did. And that, that right there, meant the world to me," Dickmann said.
Instead of selling the gun, he turned it over to the Sheriff's Office so it can safely dispose of the rifle.
If my dotage causes me to give my guns to the police, then please, PLEASE, somebody stop me. I want my grandkids to have them.

An indictment accusing an FBI agent of lying to hide that he fired two shots at Robert “LaVoy” Finicum and missed caps an 18-month investigation that began with Oregon sheriff’s detectives who followed “where the evidence led,” their commander said Wednesday.
Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson credited his investigators for their tenaciousness and said he was “disappointed and angry’’ that the FBI agent’s alleged deceit and actions “damage the integrity of the entire law enforcement profession.’’
The sheriff also revealed that FBI leaders, told of his department’s findings more than a year ago, didn’t put the agent or four of his colleagues on leave. They were all members of a Hostage Rescue Team assigned to help arrest the leaders of the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

Isn’t that like having yourself castrated because you think someone you know has too many children?
If he did not keep the gun secure it very well might have gone out and shot someone - with some criminal’s help, of course.
You better make sure you don’t go to a nursing home, and I base that on my state. Some states make sure everything is sold, and monies put in account for person’s care, and that is even if there is a WILL. Even if there is thousands in a bank account, and insurance for the payments to NH. Check on how to do that with your attorney.
Cmon, we all know it will be disposed of by one of the cops taking it home.

Lon Horiuchi did that when he shot Vicki Weaver while she was holding her baby back in 1992.
The HRT is a glorified hit squad.
Broward County Sheriff’s Office gets a Free Rifle
LOL, that's what I was thinking. "Please take my rifle before I shoot up a school!". He's probably the type of guy who should not be owning guns.
Evidently this clown was contemplating going to a school to shoot it up? What an idiot.
But he was afraid of the gun. Even if a criminal stole it, it’s the criminal not the gun’s fault.
Gee, I wonder this fellow would have done had the perp used an over under shotgun or bolt action 22 (or any other caliber) rifle? Because given police response time and that ones like the football coach were not allowed to carry their licensed firearms on school property, the perp would have likely achieved similar results with something other than an AR-15.
Clearly this man is too stupid to own a gun.
He did the right thing.
It was a Dickmann move...
If he’s a danger to himself, shouldn’t he also admit himself to a local psychiatric ward?
If this guy thinks he can’t be trusted with an AR-15, I don’t think he should be trusted with ANY guns. Police should check him out to make sure he doesn’t possess any other firearms.
I guarantee this guy is a plant who bought the gun specifically to give it away.
And the officer that wins the lottery pick in the squadroom will thank him as he’s taking it home for his collection.
