ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. New Mexico has been ranked the eighth worst state in which to retire by the financial website WalletHub.
The site ranked the states using 41 metrics on affordability, quality of life and health care.
New Mexico fared especially poorly on property crime, ranking 50th. It did better on adjusted cost of living, where it ranked 18th; the percentage of population aged 65 and older (19th); and on health care facilities per capita (19th).
The state ranked just ahead of Louisiana and just below Hawaii.

Hmmmm, what is south of the border of New Mexico?
Goes along with what I just heard about California: Highest poverty rate in America.
Interesting. I always enjoy driving through NM on my way east or west on I-10.
It’s 50/50 at the border:
Cali
Arizona
NM
Texas
50/50
Hint: “New” Mexico.
When I did a USA tour with my family back in 1991, we passed through Tucumcari and I remember they had a billboard promoting it as a great place to retire.
ML/NJ
Surely some areas of those states are bucolic and some areas are real Sh!tholes; that’s my guess anyway. Resident Freepers would be able to say which is which I am sure.
The worst reputations may be Albuquerque, Grants, and Gallup. What about Truth or Consequences?
It is a beautiful state. It does have a progressive infection in Santa Fe (as in Boulder, they love the smell of their f*rts).
We visit relatives who lived in Phoenix (their house was broken into and robbed), and also in Tucson (their house was broken into and robbed). Of course, these crimes were obviously committed by old white guys.
Given all of that, both the wife and I still love the scenery and attractions of both states.
But number one in Mexican food.
Is this one of those ratings where the conservative reader would be best advised to assume the results are 180 deg from truth?
New Mexico is part of America?
Andeles Dog House in Las Cruces ... a more casual version of their other restaurants.
Very good Mex food and great value on the senior menu.

When I hear leftists say the UK should force Northern Ireland back into Ireland I always wonder if they want to force New Mexico back into Mexico.
NM is one weird ass state. Read any of Tony Hillerman’s novels on the Navajo Tribal Police...gives a flavor of the weirdness. Makes cajun country look tame.
We always do it on I-40 because 10 is in the constitution free zone.

These kinds of stories with rankings always depend on the criteria they are measuring.
There are pluses and minuses to living anywhere.
There are deal breakers such as cold weather to some people, which are actually welcomed by others.
There are deal breakers such as a place being very liberal, which is overridden in some people’s minds by family ties or other reasons to stay in a less than ideal locale.
