Los Angeles police have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of making the swatting call that ended with a Wichita man being killed by police.
Tyler Barriss was arrested Friday afternoon, according to KABC.
Booking records for the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Office say he was arrested at 3:15 p.m. for a felony.
Barriss is accused of reporting a fake homicide and hostage situation to the Wichita Police Department just after 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
The practice is called "swatting" and happens when someone makes a call to a police department with a false story of an ongoing crime often with killing or hostages involved in an attempt to draw a large number of police officers to a particular address.

Wait, a call comes in from LA to Wichita and they immediately send out a SWAT team?
“...Must have lost playing an online game and couldn’t take the humiliation....”
Happens more often than one would think.
My son (around the same age) said this is getting more and more common with gamers.
Insanity, pure nuts.
That is the typical type of mind that the publik skools are pumping out—ignorant, arrogant, brainwashed, dumb people who can’t have a rational thought in their head.
Totally removed from Reality, Truth (God) and Western Civilization (Classical Christian curricula) by being forced into these artificial group-”think” factories so virtue is destroyed and thinking for self in rational manner is impossible.
Hang the murdering SOB.
I agree that the publik skools are a major problem, but the lack of parenting is the bigger culprit. We as a nation have chosen entertainment as our god. Parents turn their kids over to smartphones and Xboxes while the parents are totally checked out.
We are reaping what we have sown...
Family says the victim was NOT a gamer.
That was just on-line chatter.
...and that makes it all ok when Wichita police and SWAT show up, knock on your door and MURDER the very first person they see in the house. THEN try to calm things down and figure out WTF actually happened.
Good Job Wichita PD! Another unarmed intentional murder from LEO on the unarmed public. YES, HE WAS NOT ARMED. One lethal round to the chest of the innocent man without provocation, then try to ascertain if there actual is a crime being committed.
The guy in Wichita got what the guy in California deserves.
Due to the action of a prankster, we have an innocent victim. If the false police call had not been made, we would not have been there.
No mention of the responsibility for shooting an unarmed man. No investigation of the situation - just shoot. Im sickened by the cops continued lack of morality in these shootings.
It’s the online equivalent of Road Rage. Everything just escalates.
I keep my identity hidden as do almost all gamers.
~Andrew Finch was not involved in the online game, according to his mother and people in the gaming community.
“He doesnt play video games,” Finch said. “He has better things to do with his time.”~
“YES, HE WAS NOT ARMED. “
Which was discovered after the shooting, of course, so an essentially meaningless fact. If he had been armed in his own house, that’s no reason to shoot him.
The problem was that there was no real probable cause. They could have called the house and figured this one out.
Unfortunately, as is said, a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.
which one ??
Wichita cops probably have dial phones with no ID capability.
Now just why would LEO or 911 accept a call from out of the area like this ???
Did the L.A. perp call 911 in L.A. ?
Just why can’t LEO track a call and avoid this situation ?
Make it mandatory for a call to originate within 1 mile of the suspected location. So simple even a geico lizard can do it.
Area codes don’t mean much anymore.
My daughter , an officer, was seriously injured in an accident responding to one of these calls. Flipped her squad car and broke her neck, among many other injuries. She is on the road to recovery and there’s a possibility the perps may find themselves dealing with the feds.
I want to see the body cam footage before I believe the “reached for his wasitband” line.
