Bannon adviser: Ryan challenger Paul Nehlen is 'dead to us' after inflammatory tweets
CNN ^ | December 27, 2017 | Oliver Darcy

Breitbart executive chairman Steve Bannon has cut ties with Paul Nehlen, the far-right activist who is challenging Paul Ryan for his congressional seat and who has received extremely favorable coverage from Breitbart in the past.

"Nehlen is dead to us," said Arthur Schwartz, an adviser of Bannon's who is familiar with the former White House chief strategist's thinking.

Nehlen, who became a lightning rod for his anti-immigrant views, has escalated his rhetoric in recent days with a number of incendiary tweets.

In one tweet, Nehlen proudly revealed that he is reading "The Culture of Critique," a book about Jewish culture widely considered to be anti-semitic. In other tweets, he has used the "#ItsOkayToBeWhite" hashtag.

The inflammatory online activity has drawn fierce scrutiny from Nehlen's critics, and beckoned the question whether Breitbart, which previously published highly supportive coverage of his candidacy, still supported him.

When Nehlen challenged Ryan during the 2016 Republican primary, Breitbart dispatched Mathew Boyle, one of its top writers, to Wisconsin. Throughout the race, Boyle taunted Ryan on the campaign trail with outlandishly negative stories while simultaneously writing positive articles about Nehlen. Ryan ultimately walloped Nehlen by a margin of 84% to 16%.

But Breitbart and Bannon, a former White House chief strategist, have recently moved to distance themselves from him.

Nehlen, who previously published material on Breitbart, has seen his author page scrubbed entirely from the far-right website. Moreover, Joel Pollak, a senior editor at Breitbart, publicly denounced Nehlen on Twitter.

"We don't support him," Pollak tweeted late Tuesday night, adding that Nehlen had "disqualified" himself. As of Wednesday afternoon, Breitbart had not denounced Nehlen on its website. A Google search returned no articles this week about Nehlen's latest tweets or statements.

I guess you missed all the conversations here on FR...

You and I have had a conversation before, quite enjoyably in fact.

That you think you "have to sit here and try to figure out what exactly Freepers were trying to accomplish," only underscores why those obdurate Freepers aren't listening to you.

You sound like Karl Rove talking about Trump, and you're a hair away from sounding like Obama talking about the bitter clingers, or Hillary her deplorables.

You've been here more than long enough to know that the stumbling and grinding and slugging at Free Republic eventually comes 'round closer to truth and righteousness than even most of us would have hoped.

You have your voice, and we all have ours. That's how and why it works.

I bet you are right. As this came from CNN, it appears to be a divide and conquer move. And God knows, it isn’t that hard to divide a bunch of feral cats.

We need quit this running and jumping at every rumor or accusation. And quit insisting on PERFECT mirror image candidates.

ISSUES are what is important. If they can support your/PDJT’s agenda even a tiny bit, that is more than any Dem will. Of course, the more the better. But insisting on perfection will kill us. Getting rid of the ‘old guard/swamp’ should be a PARAMOUNT unified stand we should all be able to support. And stay laser focused on getting this new blood in and not abandoning them when the mud starts slinging.

Pointing out the Cohn, Mnuchin, and Gruber are all Jewish and are the architects of the 2 biggest scams in recent American history (Obamacare and “temporary” tax cuts) is not anti-semitic, it’s just a fact.

Don’t know what Nehlens bag is, but there are bad Jews just like all other groups, not a fan of Mnuchin, Cohn, or Gruber.

No group is above criticism or off limits.

Then why the complaining?

The idea that I sound like Rove or Obama actually cracks me up. LOL. I'd have a hard time coming up with two people in politics who I despise more than those two.

That's a great point.

I would also suggest that going into an election season with the expectation that a national agenda of any kind is going to be a winning approach in every House and Senate race will be disastrous. I go back to the previous example I posted from New Jersey ... where it seemed obvious to me that the posters complaining about the incumbent Republican either didn't live here or lived here and had some bizarre notion that a libertarian/conservative/populist would have a chance in hell of winning in an affluent suburban district in a major metropolitan area.

Nehlen talks too much. Wilkow has him on frequently and I have heard him many times. I do not disagree with him, but he just drones on and on.

He reminds me of Santorum with his never freaking shut up style.

They should put Alt-Right, BLM and Antifa in a locked room together and let them wipe each other out, kind of like matter and anti-matter.

That’s a Republican district.

R+5 and President Trump carried it 53-42. Paul Ryan won by even more, 65-30.

You left no way for anyone to figure out what you meant...

“Clean up his act” is non-specific. It doesn’t identify what, exactly, you think the problem is; or how it should be addressed. In other words, it was utterly devoid of meaning and content; yet you feel compelled to attempt an insult at me concerning acuity...

You don’t see that YOU are “alt-right”?

You participate on Free Republic, there have been naughty things said and deleted on this sight by all kinds of crazies. Therefore YOU are an alt-right Nazi. You do see how that works right? Just like everyone to the right of Moa in Europe is called FAR-Right at every single mention.

I’ll take to the bank what Levin says 98% of the time. And Trump DOES say dumb things from time to time, through today. No one is above criticism.

I had heard it was a Democrat one, when it was rumored that Ryan may retire.

This thread has piqued my interest in The Culture of Critique.

I did not care before.

Now I want to read it.
