A flight that was four hours into its course, bound for Tokyo's Narita Airport Tuesday, had to return to its origin of Los Angeles International Airport after an 'unauthorized person' was on-board.
The flight from LAX to Tokyo is about 12 hours long. The total time for the flight to take off and return was just over eight hours.

Don’t stune me, bro.
I'm sure there are folks here who can comment on this better than me... but my understanding is that not all commercial aircraft can dump fuel. Therefore the only option to get the weight down for landing purposes is to do circles until enough fuel is burnt off.... In this case, it might have been 8 hours but it could have been much more, I think....

I’ll bet it busted the flight crew’s duty day. If I were dispatching it, if I didn’t have an airport reserve, I’d have put the crew to bed and delayed the flight to however much time I need the crew’s duty time to reset, 12 hours, maybe?
And I like to know how the misboard happened..
Get an Ipad, earphones, a seat charger and download some movies or shows to to it. Makes the trip seem a lot less consequential. It would be a great opportunity to binge watch something like game of thrones, downton abey or vikings.

Sorry Air Nippon Airlines. ANA and Japan Airlines are the heavy hitters in Japan for air travel. They’ve jockeyed back and forth over the years as to which has better service.
I’m not sure what the issue is, but I could see that it was a failure for UA to share info with ANA on a late rebooking or something like that. The computer would catch it and things would work fine, but the printed manifest may not have been up to date.....OR much weirder things are going on - like someone else booked the ticket and then switched it with someone else.
I think the more likely scenario, and the only reason I can think that they didn’t continue to their destination is that this person wasn’t allowed to go to Japan by either Japan or the US. ie flight risk, under investigation with a hold, material witness...any number of reasons. Only thing I can figure that would cause them to turn the plane around and inconvenience the other 150+ passengers.

I doubt that very much. With the cost of fuel, and staff, plus the hell it wreaks on the aircraft’s forward going flight/crew schedules, the airline would not want to do this unless told to do so by authorities.
“I remember an old story about a guy who flew to Auckland, NZ who thought he was on a flight to Oakland, CA.”
His first clue would be when he started his second day on the plane! I used to go to Sydney, Australia from LA, and that was a 16 hour flight!
