A flight that was four hours into its course, bound for Tokyo's Narita Airport Tuesday, had to return to its origin of Los Angeles International Airport after an 'unauthorized person' was on-board.
The flight from LAX to Tokyo is about 12 hours long. The total time for the flight to take off and return was just over eight hours.

There was somebody on that plane that the U.S. did not want getting to Tokyo.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
No it was likely somebody that Tokyo would not allow entry.
Likely a Muslim cleric. Japan does not allow entry to Muslim jihad advocates.

Officially, immigration to Japan is not closed to Muslims. But the number of the immigration permits given to the applicants from Islamic countries is very low. Obtaining a working visa is not easy for adepts of Islam, even if they are physicians, engineers and managers sent by foreign companies that are active in the region. As a result, Japan is a country without Muslims.
There is no reliable estimate on the Japanese Muslim population. However, claims of thirty thousand made by some researchers are without doubt an exaggeration. Some claim that there are only a few hundred. This probably amounts to the number of Muslims openly practicing Islam. Asked to give an estimate on the actual number of Muslims in Japan, the ex-president of the Japan Islamic Association Abu Bakr Morimoto replied, To say frankly, only one thousand. In the broadest sense, I mean, if we do not exclude those who became Muslims for the sake of, say marriage, and do not practice then the number would be a few thousand.

They would be further away.

Like that Turkish cleric holed up in PA?
Don’t stune me, bro.
I'm sure there are folks here who can comment on this better than me... but my understanding is that not all commercial aircraft can dump fuel. Therefore the only option to get the weight down for landing purposes is to do circles until enough fuel is burnt off.... In this case, it might have been 8 hours but it could have been much more, I think....
I remember that.
One of the Awan dudes?
Me, too
Soros reports to Munk apparently

Ill bet it busted the flight crews duty day. If I were dispatching it, if I didnt have an airport reserve, Id have put the crew to bed and delayed the flight to however much time I need the crews duty time to reset, 12 hours, maybe?
And I like to know how the misboard happened..
Get an Ipad, earphones, a seat charger and download some movies or shows to to it. Makes the trip seem a lot less consequential. It would be a great opportunity to binge watch something like game of thrones, downton abey or vikings.

What is ANA
Theres a report of an Hawaii-bound flight turned around now

Sorry Air Nippon Airlines. ANA and Japan Airlines are the heavy hitters in Japan for air travel. They’ve jockeyed back and forth over the years as to which has better service.
I’m not sure what the issue is, but I could see that it was a failure for UA to share info with ANA on a late rebooking or something like that. The computer would catch it and things would work fine, but the printed manifest may not have been up to date.....OR much weirder things are going on - like someone else booked the ticket and then switched it with someone else.
I think the more likely scenario, and the only reason I can think that they didn’t continue to their destination is that this person wasn’t allowed to go to Japan by either Japan or the US. ie flight risk, under investigation with a hold, material witness...any number of reasons. Only thing I can figure that would cause them to turn the plane around and inconvenience the other 150+ passengers.
Only 1 flight out of sfo tonight
To nyc

“My guess is this
happens all the time. “
I doubt that very much. With the cost of fuel, and staff, plus the hell it wreaks on the aircraft’s forward going flight/crew schedules, the airline would not want to do this unless told to do so by authorities.
“I remember an old story about a guy who flew to Auckland, NZ who thought he was on a flight to Oakland, CA.”
His first clue would be when he started his second day on the plane! I used to go to Sydney, Australia from LA, and that was a 16 hour flight!
